Sony Online Entertainment has today announced that it is celebrating the 13th anniversary of its landmark massively multiplayer online role-playing game, EverQuest, by transitioning the game to a free-to-play model. Many players of the MMO genre will fondly remember the times spent in Norrath and the 18 expansions that SOE developed since 1999, and now you can experience it all over again for free.
Originally launched in 1999, EverQuest arrived as a brand new evolution within the respective MMO, RPG and online gaming genres, with continued recognitions over its epic 13-year history for pioneering major concepts such as guilds and raiding online. EverQuest now joins the ranks of fellow free-to-play favorites DC Universe Online and EverQuest II – both of which successfully made the transition to free-to-play within the past year.

EverQuest’s new free-to-play system is now available to all PC players worldwide, including options for Free, Silver ($5.00 USD) and Gold ($14.99 USD/month) memberships.
Check out the press release over here which details all the content available as well as the in-game events being held to celebrate 13 years of adventure, as well as the free-to-play transition.

Head over to the official website where you can sign up for a free account, and check out the trailer below which shows how much the world has changed, and what to expect in the free-to-play model.

Loved this back in the day.

FTP opens some interesting options tho, going to give this a play through with a group of 3 or 4 boxed chars I reckon, should be fun!

Gave it a shot, forgot how crap it was. If you owned characters before it was made f2p can can use them.

Tank merc is balls, would let the merc tank the mob down to 80%, I'd then hit it once with an auto attack and pull agro.

I still like EQ. Of all the MMOs I have played (and there are a lot, EQ is the only one I consistently go back to).

Always have, I go back to it about once a year last time I played was in December. Overall it's mechanics are better than wow and until GOD more skill was required for raid content (no dumb agro meters, or boss helpers), but the client engine is arse and sometime around LDON or GOD they lost the plot. Every expansion they have ever released has had more content than WoW.

And shad sounds like fail, he bought the lowest level merc (this is where shad goes wtf there are different levels ? ... yeah multiple tiers and levels inside tiers). The General complaint about Journeyman (instead of apprentice) tanks is to be they were better then real tanks at holding agro.

ps. you only need to box 3 toons (get mercs) and upgrade them ffs, unlike shad fail.

Apprentice level 5 Merc tank in MT role. Unless you are talking about the mercs above apprentice which are not available in free to play.

Well in that case it's worth paying the extra cos the apprentice mercs are like tits on shad ... fun but not useful.
