Bethesda have released a new behind the scenes style trailer for RAGE, that in addition to more new gameplay, takes a bit of a stroll down memory lane, discussing the lineage of id Software games and how they've helped create and shape the first person shooter genre.

The video also features insights from several of id's veteren developers including Todd Hollenshead, Tim Willits, Kevin Cloud, Matt Hooper and John Carmack. Noteably, the video closes with this tantalising quote from Carmack:
"We are arguably the best looking game on the consoles today and the point is, we are running at two times the frame-rate of what other people might argue is the best looking console game there. So this has allowed us to have a distinct visual-style, fabulous top of the line graphics and still run at 60 frames per second; have a better gameplay experience, not just a better looking game.
The current best looking console game referenced there is likely Crysis 2, however the quote is perhaps even more interesting following recent comments from the developers of Modern Warfare 3.

I'm gonna give this a go. Can't be any worse than Duke Nukem.

Theres a lot of little things I keep seeing in Rage videos that are adding up for me. Momentum gained by enemies doesn't stop when they die and their body crumples and slides in the direction they were going. No retarded ragdolls in stupid positions since they seem to of combined death animations with human like ragdoll limitations. Stuff like that is making this a must by for me.

Also lol @ EB's "special" edition. Special is right.

My biggest hope for Rage is that the Driving & first person shooter gameplay are one and the same, as in you get in & out of the car seamlessly. Even though that video quotes is all in the one environment / gamestate, I've yet to see visual proof that otherwise (if I there is a vid, happy to be corrected if so)

As first person shooters with vehicular combat today have this sort of unexplainable issue were they struggle to have both good vehicular and a respectively good 'on foot' experience. Don't get me wrong games like Battlefield Bad Company 2 are fun to play, but compare the gunplay of that game to a Call Of Duty or even their Medal Of Honor game, the guns feel so much better in them. But of course vice versa you get in the tank in Medal Of Honor & it's a jittery piece of crap. The only games that have really excelled in vehicular combat + FPS'ery are Enemy Territory : Quake Wars & Unreal 2004.

So yea i guess my rant comes down to I don't want the driving to just be a tacked-on smoke & mirror trick to the first person shooter code. I want my cars to have suspension & fun damage models etc, just like a car game i guess. That's an advancement I'd like to see ID take. Sure the game looks pretty & may have all this fancy tech, but so does every new big FPS title these days.

/places $0.02 on table.

I'm still on the fence about whether it's going to be a good game or not. First up, I'm really turned off by the post-apocalyptic thing, mostly because I'm fatigued with the theme and secondly, I just don't have confidence in id's ability to craft a decent story because it's something that they haven't done with any of the prior games. Story was irrelevant in their most acclaimed games, but Rage is going to heavily depend on it.

So I'm definitely going in with low expectations there with hope of being pleasantly surprised.

Last we heard, they're not doing dedicated server support either, which while not necessary for the 4 player coop gameplay they're gearing their story campaign for, might hamper what modders are able to come up with from the developer tools they are supposedly going to be offering.

If the tech 5 engine really is as good as it looks, I hope they open up the licensing for it more than they did for tech 4 so we actually get some more games building on it.

If that s*** is running at 60FPS on 360 and PS3, it's going to be butter on a PC.

Aw really? now that is disappointing. If L4D1 and 2 can have dedicated server support for their 4 person co-op mode why the hell can't rage? I think it worked out very well for valve.

Yeah, it's been a while since we've heard any developments. here's the last I can remember: http://www.ausgamers.com/news/read/2894933 note that they were still oddly saying "probably not".

Steve has interviewed id a couple of times since then, but I keep forgetting to remind him to ask about it. I'd really like to understand where they're coming from with that choice, especially as the guys that frikken invented the client/server model in shooters.

I agree with you Dan, I don't think game has enough to hold up, it doesn't look like it offers much new and seems to have a lot of different aspects which we've already seen. Will wait for the reviews but this game for me isn't one which I'm waiting for.

If your game won't be published by Bethesda you have no luck in licensing id tech 5.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-08-12-id-tech-5-only-for-bethesda-titles
id Software boss Todd Hollenshead has told Eurogamer that id Tech 5 will not be licensed out to third party developers and publishers.

Launched with great fanfare at QuakeCon 2007, id Tech 5 forms the basis of the studio's flagship Rage title and had been billed as a competitor in the middleware business to the likes of Unreal Engine 3.

Following id Software's acquisition by ZeniMax Media in 2009, however, Hollenshead said that the technology would be reserved for games published by ZeniMax and Bethesda Softworks.

"It's going to be used within ZeniMax, so we're not going to license it to external parties," Hollenshead told Eurogamer at QuakeCon 2010 in Dallas today.

"It's like, look, this is a competitive advantage and we want to keep it within games we publish - not necessarily exclusively to id or id titles, but if you're going to make a game with id Tech 5 then it needs to be published by Bethesda, which I think is a fair thing."

Hollenshead said he could imagine the technology being used by third-party developers, but only if their games were published by Bethesda, under which circumstances id would withhold nothing.

It seems an awful lot like Borderlands to me.

But I have faith id will make a great game. No one makes a first person game feel as 'good' as id can.

Not surprising, considering few are willing to actually pay the high licensing fees of engines these days. Really all they're doing is saying "noone will buy our product, so we're just going to say we're keeping it internal".

Yeah i found that strange too. And Carmack also made a point about how groundbreaking it was when he coded it in the original Quake in that 15-years retrospective Bethesda Blog posted last week.

Client/Server doesn't necessarily imply dedicated servers.

Anyway the norm seems to be P2P these days thanks to console newbosity, with a handful of client/server games, and an even smaller number of dedicated-server friendly games.

Doesn't sound like id is interested in pushing pc hardware any more which makes me a sad panda.

Also I'm not worried about the desert feel of it since I haven't played Borderlands or Fallout 3.

Here is another developer bragging about being able to run at 60 fps on 5 yr old console video tech.
It just says to me better compromises and crippled potential. The texture effect they have gone with (cough Borderlands) does not look as processing intensive as a more photo realistic approach.

I hope it is a good game. I played Borderlands all the way through and it got boring near the end, partly because there were a gizzillion weapons in it but none had any personally. If I start getting Borderlands deja vu in this game I can't see myself finishing it.

Hope there is a demo.
