The Spike TV Video Game Awards didn't just set loose a bunch of 2011 hysteria for upcoming and newly announced titles, it also served as something of an official comment from Blizzard that their next-gen MMO, codenamed "Titan", is very much real and scheduled for potential release in 2013.

Speaking with Destructoid at the event, and answering questions about leaked info earlier in the month regarding the company's internal development and release roadmap for the next few years, Blizzard co-founder and executive Vide President, Frank Pearce, confirmed the game's existence and codename.

"Titan is... the media is not meant to know anything about that," he told the site. "It's our next-gen MMO, and we've only started talking about it in a limited fashion because we want to leverage the fact that we're working on something like that for the purpose of recruiting--getting some of the best talent in the industry on that."

Rumours speculate that the MMO will, in fact, be for console and that it will not eat into World of WarCraft's fan-base as a result (which does make sense). It is also suggested it will be an entirely brand-new IP from Blizzard, and not based on any of their current or former franchises.

Let the rampant speculation begin!

I speculate that it will be better looking than WoW is and that I still wont want to play it.

I was reading somewhere (possibly here somewhere...) that Titan was the name being thrown around for the rumored Halo related MMO that Bungie was going to be working on. Given that Blizz, and Bungie are now (AFAIK) both under the Activision umbrella it wouldn't be a very far stretch to link the two.

It would also explain it being a console (only) release and how it would not cut into Blizzards current MMO property.

mmo's on console are fail.

but it wouldn't then be announced as brand new IP, therefore it probably isn't

Interesting theory, but pretty sure Microsoft own the rights to the Halo franchise.

IMO, it'd be good to see Blizz carve a new IP. They've been sitting on their big 3 for too long now.

The only other tidbit of information I remember reading a while ago is that their next MMO will play significantly differently to WOW.

Read that as 1st person or however you want, but there you go.

A planned expansion for Diablo 3 isn't news. It is a standard affair for Blizzard (as they can make money off an already developed engine and IP) and surely they will make enough off of initial sales that it wouldn't even remotely need subsiding from their WoW income.

thanks for that invaluable piece of info Apocalypse. pretty sure they still classify such things as news champ.

Yeah 99% sure this is the case (everyone keeps saying that reach was the last Halo game that Bungie was working on. That being said, I couldn't think of anything more boring (unless of course it had RvB commentary).

The first MMO to be on consoles was Everquest Online Adventures I believe. (PS2 game)

So I checked ... Supposedly Phantasy star supported 4 players. ie. not a peristent world with a massive number of players. According to wiki
The first console-based open-world MMORPG was Final Fantasy XI for the Sony PlayStation 2. EverQuest Online Adventures, also on the PlayStation 2, was the first console MMORPG in North America

4 player network RPGs are not MMO's ... Even if they have lobbies. It'd be like saying Diablo 2 was an MMO.

Didn't Bungie mention that they were going to do something new after Reach?

I read this as move away from Halo so when the rumors surfaced of a Halo MMO I was a little surprised. It would be a hard stretch to change the IP, keep the codename, remain an MMOFPS and avoid any IP legalities with Microsoft though.

I'm 99% sure I read all this speculation on Team Liquid.

Ah, thought Phantasy Star was bigger than that. Had a feeling it was one of those big online things over in Asia.
