And now, a word from our sponsor...

Mammoth VPS has been going great guns since we launched back in March of this year. Our biggest problem has been trying to keep up with demand; turns out a lot of people want their own VPS on the Internet for all manner of interesting things - blogs, web hosting, private file storage, cloud services, foreign exchange trading, you name it.

As of last week we've boosted our hosting capacity with a significant hardware upgrade. We're also offering a limited number of discount codes to AusGamers readers first and foremost - 40% off for two months, which will let you get your very own Linux box for less than $6.

For more information and to sign up, head over to the Mammoth VPS website, and check the comments for the code.

The code - AGN40NOV - is limited to the first 15 customers, and only valid for the month of November, 2010. So get in quickly if you want to use it.

Surely at that size you're better off going 'bare metal' (dedicated server)

All depends what you want it for.. sure I could buy a DELL for a few thousand with the specs I'm after but then I'd need to find colo space, sort out comms, buy firewalls & routers, etc. This way I can try out something on a VPS and if it doesn't work, turn it off and cancel the service.

(I'm using similar spec machines at RackSpace Cloud but would like an AU server too)

If you go to the signup page (..and wait a while for it to load all the elements, it is a little weird atm) you can actually expand the base plans with up to 8gb of RAM and up to 1800gb of disk space.

edit: the system actually supports up to 16, it's just that at the moment we have no physical hosts with that much available RAM. If you really wanted a 16gb one though, we would be able to shuffle things around to free up that much space so you could do it, I'm pretty sure.

I was looking at getting a Mammoth VPS, until I found Jumba VPS... $9.95/mo vs $58.19/mo made that decision easy.

Cheers trog, I'll look into if we can use some of your machines for some stuff as the price is almost better than what we're paying now - particularly if we can bundle in bandwidth. I got a couple of questions for you though;

- Do you have a load balancer available?
- Do you have a firewall available or is it host based only?
- Do the machines have a private IP to communicate with each other (and if so is data measured)?
- If we buy multiple servers (about 8) do they show up under the one admin account?
- Is it easier if I email you a bunch of servers and specs we need to get a quote :)

^ you have to decide how important it is to be hosted in Australia, US Bandwidth is cheap and plentiful but it's somewhat painful if you run your entire operation out of Australia

Yes

Host based only.

Private IP is provided, data is free on the LAN.
- If we buy multiple servers (about 8) do they show up under the one admin account?
Yes

They are super cheap, but it's important to note one key difference (... at least, the difference as I understand them; I am happy to be corrected) - Jumba are using OpenVZ as their virtualization platform, and Mammoth VPS is using Xen.

I am not intricately familiar with the differences, but basically memory in the OpenVZ platform is 'shared', so YMMV as far as memory availability goes. In Xen, when you are told you get 512mb of RAM, it means you have a dedicated, allocated chunk of memory that is permanently yours and won't be affected by what other people are doing.

Both systems obviously have their pluses and minuses and you should pick the right tool for the job though!

Thanks Nathan - I've sent an enquiry using the online form about what boxes & specs we need.

briefly it looks like openvz uses more memory, but performance is similar. go up to $30/mo for a jumba 1024mb openvz slice and you're still a lloong way in front... mm regardless, I'm very happy that there's finally some competition with aus vps hosting.

You're a long way in front, as long as noone else needs that memory when you want it :) There's a few tales on WP (and various other sites) about slower-than-expected performance under OpenVZ, especially when doing things like trying to ramp up a number of high memory using processes suddenly (eg, like starting some Apache variants that have greedy requirements and want to start many processes at once).

Again, it just comes down to what you want to use it for; I would have zero hesitation using Jumba for my personal website/VPS needs for sure, at that price point!

If You don't support mammoth
VPS you get double ad banners on qgl :)

Ive had a vps since it started, working well still a few hiccups a few months back when demand spiked but it's back to awesomeness again.

One advantage Mammoth have over Jumba is that they have vps servers available. The Jumba site says they will have new vps available from the 1/11/10 but nothing is available at the moment. Also Jumba vps only have a 10Mbit link to the web which can slow traffic if you have more than a handful of visitors to your site. I just signed up for a Mammoth VPS and it is working and available in a few minutes. The only problem I had was I clicked the "service agreement" link and it opened in my current web window so when I went back I had to fill in some details again. Unfortunately I didn't check the OS and the vps was created with SUSE but that was easy to fix in the mpanel. I just selected the OS I wanted and checked the other details and a few minutes later I have the vps I want. Very nice. I hope everything else works this good.

So I setup a whole bunch of VPS at Mammoth (10 servers in total) and with 2 custom servers built (RAM requirements) I can't fault or criticise either the build time or the support from Nathan and the rest of the guys when I asked a thousand and one questions along the way.

+1 for being a happy customer.
