One of the most interesting of the various new features Harmonix have lined up for Rock Band 3 is the game's pro-mode, where their popular rhythm game franchise is now attempting to narrow the divide between playing the game and playing a real guitar.

Today's new trailer offers a demonstration and detailed explanation of the game's "Pro Mode" option and the two new guitar controllers that punters will be able to purchase separately to augment their experience - one of which can actually be plugged into an amp and function as a regular guitar.
Our main focus was making the game so that people with no or little guitar experience could learn the basics of a song. We've had a lot of focus tests with people where they went from no guitar experience to being able to play power chords on the easier Medium difficulty songs within an hour.

In our opinion, it's not enough to simply teach players power chords at random spots and call it a day. From Easy to Expert while playing Rock Band 3, we don't just want to give another way to let you FEEL like you are playing guitar – we want you to be ACTUALLY playing guitar.

Aint cheap. Can't find price / stock location of the Fender Stratocaster Pro controller yet, but I imagine it would be rather exxy.

Isn't there a full blown real guitar that Fender is making that works with the game too? Like it has real strings all the way down, and you can plug it into an amp and play it like a real guitar, but it also has the electronics inside it that let you plug it into your console and use it as a Rock Band controller. That one sounds pretty wicked, but yeah, probably gonna be pricey.

Edit: Oh, guess I should have watched the video first, it was covered in there :P

But yeah, mad props to Harmonix and Rock Band for actually pushing things forward. Guitar Hero is just sitting back cranking out the same shit over and over and making a big deal over things like "Oh we have Gene Simmons and some cool new cutscenes in single player!" while Harmonix with Rock Band are actually innovating and pushing it forward. Much love.
