As promised, Runic Games have announced that their follow up to Torchlight will indeed introduce a multiplayer component to the acclaimed action RPG (AusGamers 7.5).
Torchlight II answers the overwhelming call of our community with an expansive co-op multiplayer experience. With all new character classes, an expansive overworld, new quests, monsters, and lots of new dungeons, Torchlight II finally lets you play with your friends in the world of Torchlight. Consistent with our pledge to provide unmatched value, Torchlight II will be sold at a low price point, and include a free matchmaking service for peer-to-peer multiplayer experience. Expect Torchlight II to ship in the spring of 2011.
Interestingly, they've opted to postpone their plans for an MMO game, instead opting for what appears to be smaller scale Diablo-esque multiplayer.
Runic Games CEO, Max Schaefer commented, Were so proud of everything Torchlight accomplished, and we feel that Torchlight II will not only give the fans everything theyve asked for, but far surpass its predecessor in terms of fun, balance, customization, story, and just being a great game to play with your friends.

"We still are going to make the MMO, but it became apparent that Torchlight II was the logical next step for us given the phenomenal enthusiasm of gamers petitioning us for multiplayer."
Unfortunately there's no screens or trailers available yet, only a bit of boring concept-art over on PC Gamer, but they will be showing an alpha build of the game to media at the upcoming GamesCom expo in Germany in a couple of weeks time.

Currently slated for an Autumn 2011 release (U.S. Spring 2011), it will be interesting to see if it beats the hugely anticipated Diablo III (currently rumoured for a "2011" launch) to shelves.

i think they're pushing s*** up hill if they want to realease it at the same time as diablo 3

i know i won't be getting it if it's remotely close to the diablo 3 release

I honestly don't think Diablo III will be released by their release date for Torchlight 2.

Looks like it could be an awesome game experience though! I can't wait for the multiplayer, and to see how they work with it.

The first Torchlight sucked.

Had so many bugs and uninteresting item pickups that I haven't played it for 4 months, I played maybe 8 hours in (trying to justify my purchase).

Even after applying as many mods to the game to try to get it interesting... no luck.

A diablo clone that copy and pastes so many ideas that it is a poorly executed concept.

It was rather cheap when I picked it up though.

Diablo III won't be out until just before the world ends.

i loved the first one, had no bugs and a very enjoyable experience

played it for hours, cleaned out the first dungeon and stax of the second

was half tempted to reply with a second character, but played other games instead;

not sure if im interested in multiplayer, too much of an effort hooking up with other people to play, will give the single player a go again though!

yeh it was the opposite of sucked and poorly executed - it's a good game. the cloning of diablo features is a really good idea, cos diablo has heaps of excellent features. plus torchlight added to them.
but it did get boring pretty quick, specially with no multiplayer

Its a fantastic game - and great fun I've played it heaaaaps - I'm happy for it to come out at the same time as d3 because I know I'd give both a crack. Theres so few decent rpg games coming out these days it makes me sad as I probably like them more than anything

I love this game. I still get on my destroyer every now and then and go delving :P
lvl 76 at lvl 35 of the shadow labyrinth. Apparently once you get past floor 100 the enemies get ridiculously tough, regardless of the difficulty, as they keep lvling but u get capped at 100

I f*****g LOVED this game. I only stopped playing because I couldnt multi with my friends.

I would never have brought the sequal if it was a mmo, so this is good for torchlight!

The modding on this game is AMAZING. Scroll of respect mod is a must!

Have to say I got bored of this pretty quick, probably mainly due to the story line sucking balls. I would rate Titan Quest better than this and anyone who has not played it check it out because it's awesome, some great features which Diablo could have used in it too.

Are they doing an EA where they'll tack on an extra feature (albeit in this case it's a pretty big one) and charge everyone the price of first one even though most people have the first one already?

i hope blizzard takes their time with diablo 3. I dont mind waiting for blizzard, they take their time and never release a shotty game. You can get all excited about their releases and not get let down.

With Battle.Net 3.0, you no longer even need to worry about forming parties and wading through your friends list to see who's on. Just click on 'Team Multiplayer' and we'll automatically match you with players of the appropriate level. Due to release schedules, for you convenience this is the only way to create parties in Diablo III at launch.

Note that your Facebook-integrated profile will automatically match you with Facebook friends who are online.

The built-in emote system allows you to quickly communicate one of 20 messages with the click of a hotkey, eliminating the need to type anything in, and ensuring a pleasant and grief-free experience for our players.
