We knew it would happen, but it won't stop Blizzard from gloating. StarCraft II has become the fastest selling RTS of all time, and is currently the fastest selling PC title of 2010. Day one sales of the game put it in more than one million consumers' hands within the first 24 hours of release worldwide, with 1.5 million pushed out the door within 48 hours.

"We launched StarCraft II in 11 different languages and on 5 different continents because we wanted to make sure as many players as possible were able to log on and play on day one," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment (via press release). "We're pleased that so many people around the world have already picked up a copy of the game, and we look forward to welcoming even more players to Battle.net in the weeks and months ahead."

Just once I wish a post-release press release said something like "told ya so" or "we're number one, you're number two!" For more StarCraft II on AusGamers, click here.

No stuffing about, no long replies please... I loved StarCraft and the Brood War expansion. Thoroughly enjoyed the single player campaigns but didn't play much online because I got owned (thanks to my massive lag on dial up). Loved playing with friends at LANS - I know no LAN mode anymore, but who bothers lugging their PCs around these days anyway?

1) Should I buy StarCraft 2?
2) Should I buy physical boxed game or is digital download fine?
3) EB Games has it marked at $99, are they on drugs?

3) JB have it for $69

I would buy the boxed copy - it took me over 7 hours to download using Blizzard's stupid p2p downloader (the whole time, it is of course using your bandwidth to save them money on distribution costs), then an hour to install and patch. Plus IIRC someone said its a little cheaper if you can get the boxed copy for around $70? Can't remember.

SC2 is great and there is an awesome Aussie community based around this site that Hogfather has setup www.starcraft.org.au.

The single player game is brilliant, and multiplayer, even though it's restricted is so much fun.

It's well worth the money.

I got the digital download as well after trying without any luck to find a hard copy in stores. The download took me 5 hours on BPA cable for the 7GB download (and 2GB of upload on the P2P downloader). Once I had it downloaded, it only took me 20 minutes to install and patch though.

One thing that I did notice was the fact that the north america regioned version for digital download is 60USD, but the southeast asia/ANZ version is 90AUD. Seems to be the way of regional pricing these days though.

Over an hour? Mine took about 15minutes tops including the patch .. the longest it took to install was about 30 minutes on my Macbook (which is because I could only use the one mouse button to click the dialog buttons). I would buy the box, takes to long to download with their gay arse p2p system.

My only complaint is the regionalised servers, it's f*****g dongs. The fact that I can't chat with my buddies in WoW (and vice versa while playing WoW) really s**** me off but they said they'll fix it within 2 months by allowing us to create an account on the US b.net servers.

When using the Blizzard downloader your speeds will often increase if you disable peer to peer in the settings. With peer to peer enabled the HTTP direct connection dwindles and you are basically left with download speeds slightly better than your upload.

The game is a lot of fun :)

Yeah i bought it digitally, and yeah blizzards downloader p2p shiz wiz was lame... so i thought to myself... why dont i torrent it from my own sources.. turns out an .iso of the original disc is an exact image of what blizzards p2p shiz wiz downloads... instead of taking the estimated 7hours to download 7 gig it took me 59minuts.

HuzzaH!

Sadly i bought an EU version and now i cant play with any friends, considering buying another copy anyway, so i can lan it up with my son.

No LAN :( You'll have to be on BNet, which means the same f***en region.

There may be a LAN hack out there by now, there's a lot of motivation to get one done.

Bulls*** like this is why the game got a 9.0 instead of a 10.0.

This is the first new game released since the Activision merger, and to be honest IMO it really shows. The game itself is still awesome, but suits have infiltrated the ancillary stuff. Suits can ruin anything.

watch the opening cut scene pave, before the main menu.

then speak to him on the ship and he gives a bit more info. i haven't got too far in single-player yet but that should give you a pretty good idea. i suspect it's a pretty important plot thing, it's got to do with those mobius chaps - so if someone does post it please use spoiler tags :)

Aye. Why can't suits be content to just make snow angels in their piles of cash, snort coke off a hookers tits and pretend to be useful like they do the rest of the time. Leave the tech stuff to the game developers!

Server Maintenance - August 5th, 2010 at 04:00am SST
We will be performing maintenance on the Southeast Asia (SEA) Battle.net servers on Thursday, August 5th 2010. Maintenance will begin at 04:00 AM SST / 06:00 AM AEST and conclude at approximately 06:00 AM SST / 08:00AM AEST on the same day.

Maybe in Soviet Europe~! But seriously I'm in the UK and been playing regularly with a friend in Germany and neither of us have had any problem like that.

Also, there is so no reason whatsoever to buy the digital download unless you literally cannot be bothered moving from your chair..

To buy a physical copy is cheaper (even the most expensive places are selling it for the same price as the digital download), much faster to install (ie. download), gives you a physical backup, and once you've associated the CD key with your battle.net account you always have a digital download of the game available as well.

Here's a tip for 3v3/4v4 games, if one of you gets rolled, quickly share control and have the player who was wiped out micro an army while the other person/s macro.

We have come from being totally smashed 3v3 down to 3v2, down to 3v1, though we still had 2 armies left at this point.
Being able to micro-manage that efficiently from there on, whilst the person with the untouched base continued to macro, it works out like you're a 500APM stimmed Korean and we ended up beating a team of a few diamonds :)

Yeah, I'm almost over it, its so unstable, I dunno if its a Windows 7 thing or a 64 bit Windows 7 thing or what, but it blue screens windows all the time for me. If I try and alt+tab out of it, blue screen, whenever I quit the game, blue screen. Also seem to get random slowdown sometimes during games. Along with the broken voice chat, I'm rapidly becoming rather unimpressed with the game.

Expected better from Blizzard tbh.

I get lumped into a 2 vs 2 and my partner did one nuke in 45 minutes, ZERO other units.

The other 2 players didn't attack me ONCE, just turtled inside their base while I attempted to kill them 1 vs 2 with Mutas/zergling drops and s***.

Is this style of play fun to people? To never attack.

Ah yeah no, sounds like you're in practice league, and the speed is probably also on normal then, and not on faster which is how its played.

Head on over to ww.starcraft.org.au
There are replays of us there and such there of how hectic games get.
Athzhir and myself last night 2v2 diamond league play we mined out the entire map, there was units attacking units and/or buildings at least once every 30-60 seconds, obviously not at the very start but once production ramps up on both sides, this is about true.

That mining out of the entire map was all used up resources from both sides.

Its not, from reading the technical support forums, theres other people having exactly the same problem :(

Yeah, its not vid card drivers, at least I don't think it is, the BSOD message is something like SERVICE_SHUTDOWN_EXCEPTION

Its not heat, been monitoring the heat of everything while I play.

And its not general stability cos I can crank out hours of prim95 and memcheck without error :(

Doesn't seem to be a widespread problem, but yeah, from reading around, others are getting it too. Sounds like it'll be a pain in the arse to even reproduce let alone fix though. But f*** me its getting annoying.

I was getting an error where the sound would start stuttering and sc2 would pretty much lock up and drop out to the menu after a while.

Turns out it had something to do with my settings, it's been said that if you deviate from the 'default' settings for Audio/Visual option it can cause that issue.

So I put mine back to the default 'High' setting and haven't had it lock up since.

I noticed having these issues trying to complete all 29 missions on hard. Somtimes they came up as completed, sometimes not. After completing 1 mission a whole bunch would suddenly come up as _not_ completed...just wondering if anyone else is seeing this sort of bizarre issue. Such a polished game MP wise, but SP has proven to be frustrating...
