StarCraft II Australian Launch Event Details

Over the weekend, Blizzard AU gave us details on the local launch plans for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty - their much anticipated sci-fi RTS, due to release here on July 27.

Given the game's stature though, there'll be a midnight launch happening in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland with Brisbane (King George Square, opposite EB Games’ Albert Street store) holding the torch as the main place to be. Here's a run down:

Entertainment will start from 9:30pm, July 26th and include:
StarCraft Trivia contest: Test your knowledge of the StarCraft universe
StarCraft Sound-a-like contest: Give your best StarCraft unit impressions - is your Battlecruiser operational?
Live Developer Q&A with StarCraft II Producer Kaeo Milker
StarCraft Cosplay contest: Come dressed as your favourite StarCraft characters
Come prepared for the occasion, as there will be thousands of dollars worth of prizes to be won, including gear from AMD, Razer, SteelSeries and lots of official Blizzard merchandise.

You can check out more details by clicking here, but it could be time to get your Zerg costume out of the closet. AusGamers plans to be on-hand in Brisbane for the event as well, so stay tuned for any updates that come our way ahead of July 26.

Oh man... Starcraft cosplay will be terrible. I'd like to see pics of that. Eagerly awaiting 27th when my collectors edition arrives. Actually now that I think of it, this will be my first ever collector's edition for a Blizzard game since they always sell out way to bloody fast.

This will be my fourth, followed by my fifth later this year, all boxes pretty much mint condition too and attached to my partially banned account ><

I opened my WoW vanilla CE the other day to get my cd key in case blizzard wanted it and it smelled new still ... Its a little bit sad, I'm going to need a bigger shelf soon.

I predict nobody will actually turn up in costumes. I went to the big launch for Wrath of the Lich King which had prizes for cosplay, and 1 person turned up wearing a pair of elf ears made out of paper and won the prize.

heh just got home and found emails from blizzard saying my battle.net password has been reset and the account been suspended etc. dunno how the fuck i got hacked.

edit: when i try to login it says my email doesnt exist :/

edit: heh i reset the password etc and logged in. my account is associated with a suspended wow burning crusades. i quit wow before any expansions had come out.

be wary of hoax emails from hackers too.
some of those emails are scarily close to the real thing.

also, I cant seem to find any details on the launch anywhere other than Bris stores. wondering about the Syd venues?

Yeah they sold out pretty fast, as is always the case with blizzard CEs. I had mine already to go on the first day they were up.

And yet, there'll probably be entire pallets of the CE's at the nearby Frys Electronics down the road, on launch day. Just like the other Blizzard CEs... :)

I'm getting the CE and will go to the midnight launch at Indro (as it's a 2 minute walk from my house). I'm not keen enough to bother going into the city though.

Indeed. Manliness is directly proportional to SC II achievement score. I read it on the internet, on a blog (!), so it must be true.

Blizz said they were going to offer digital purchases, but I'm not sure that capability will be ready by the 27th...they've been awfully 'mum' about it since it was first mentioned in January..

I'm still trying to get a response from Blizzard as to why the game costs $27(US) more here than it does elsewhere. I somehow doubt shipping is that expensive to Australia.

You can do this at launch, but you'll need to buy a copy for each region you wish to play in.

I THINK the consensus is that we want to play on uswest if possible.

But as many of us have pre-orders we might be locked into SEA. We have a couple weeks to work it out.

OK goodo. Well I'm getting my preorder copy from EB for an outrageous amount of dosh as it's the CE and from EB.....I thought I read somewhere though that you could use any copy on any region - but once locked/registered to that region it was locked.

Yes - this is the current consensus / hope. You can activate any full-blown retail key to any region through your battle.net account (which may include a one-time tying of the account to a region?), but its fixed once its there.

IMO they should have a global authentication system and you just fire up the region version of the game. I guess that was ~~too hard~~ not profitable enough for Kotik.

Yeh absolutely, if the boxed keys allow it to happen then defo choose us west. The box probably installs SEA though so you'll need to download the client.
