Heroes of Newerth Open Beta

S2Games has just announced the start of the Heroes of Newerth open beta.

With the release of 0.3.0 we are preparing for Open Beta which will begin Wednesday, March 31 @ 4:00pm PST. We will continue to work on the client and improve all the additions to the game. We also have an awesome new hero on the way! We haven't released ANY information about it, however I'm sure you will see some stuff leaked soon.

HoN has been extremely popular for a closed beta. There is never any less then 20,000 people online at one time (usually there is around 50,000). It will be interesting to see if that number increases much as it seems anyone who is interested about the game has already been invited into the closed beta.

Feel a bit sorry for the people who pre-purchased HoN o so many many months ago hoping it would go retail at some point. Unfortunetly it doesn't look like it'll go retail any time soon and I know a lot of people who got bored of the game after many months and who pre-purchased. I guess its not really ripping off the people since the game was very polished but still..

I pre-purchased once it was available. I had already played it enough and gotten my $30 worth. Even if I didn't play any longer I would not of felt ripped off. Also people who pre-ordered knew exactly what they were buying, another reason it is not a rip off.

How can you say that it won't go retail? They just did a huge update to the interface, added matchmaking, polished settings, adding an ingame ladder, made it so you can always use the chat features unless ingame, enhanced the stats display to show more details. The list goes on... I don't see how could say "hoping it would go retail at some point".

I predict a couple months of open beta and then release. Could go on for a lot longer though...

Why? The $30USD sure gave more benefits in terms of playability of the game than $110 on a xbox game.

Even if you had the choice of not paying that money, it could hardly be considered a poor investment compared to other options.

They get to taunt, which influences the game in a strange way. There's some other things too, but most are useless. Also they don't look like newbs so they don't instantly get kicked from a game during its filling process. Not a lot of things.

But here's the oportunity cost: The money could have been spent on the game gaining very little. OR the money could have been used to be spent on 1/4th another game which you may play only 1/4th as much (or even less depending on how much you enjoy hon.) Hence the opportunity cost isn't all that high.

People who pre purchase get a couple little things. Once as open beta starts you can no longer get those things. I am assuming you can get them other ways later on though, I think I read it somewhere.

Here is more to the official statement above about pre purchases...

"That being said, the incentives we have been giving to pre purchase the game will be coming to an end when we begin Open Beta. That means if you want the Golden Shield, Golden Name, and the ability to Taunt (SMACKDOWN), you should pre purchase NOW!"

This game is fucking excellent. $30 is a steal. The learning curve is really steep, and it contains probably one of the worst, most abusive communities around. But if you can find a few decent people to play with you and constructively critique your playing, it's incredibly rewarding.

Easily my most played game of the last 6 months.

QGL people should add me - Phar84.

If you do start playing, check out the offical forums for guides for a good portion of the heroes in the game. The "Premium guides" under the Strategy section are especially excellent.

Also, when you begin playing, make sure you join unranked games only. You WILL die a lot and this WILL affect your team in a really negative way, so it's only fair to play in games that stats aren't being recorded for while you learn.

I havn't been online in a long time, the people I played with have been busy and i tend to get annoyed playing without at least one of them. My username is the same as it is here, skythra.

My PSR is only 1650? (it fluctuates a bit)

I tend to play support characters (my most played is nymph). PSR doesn't mean much, neither does KD. If you play agility characters and have low KD ratio then that is bad. But if you play a tanking support (avernus, etc) then you can expect to die more often than get kills, though if you're a tank, you should probably only expect to die a few times per game.

If it's your first time, take some strength based characters, anything with a stun makes a good team player early on.

Definitely one of the most abusive communities I've come across. I've seen genuine newbies got abused all game because... they're newbie and don't know how the game plays yet (feeding, ganking, jungle, not knowing what abilities work well with other heroes, not knowing what abilities the enemies have and to watch out for, poor item choice.. the list goes on).

Which is great because /b/ tards are all easy to shut up. Most of them sit in the jungle playing WoW (basically suggesting that they're pveing like some kind of gold farmer instead of assisting the team etc). They complain when the rest of the team doesn't carry them unhindered to level 20 (despite you know, the team often having to fight 4v5 because the farmer needs his epic items) and then use their KD stats to prove that they're not the problem (they never die in the jungle and have epic items to lasthit enemies much easier than the team who has been struggling to defend against 5).

You tell them to get back to their internet cliche's and wank off over their kiddie porn. Clearly their one handed playstyle has got them far.

When i offend a /b/ tard that they are almost always going to be easily pointed out by the fact that they are retarded kids between the ages of 15-17 and almost always shouting about the latest internet trend.

I bet you, i never offend those "slect few" because I highly doubt they would be spouting "CATLAWLZ" and other internet meme's around in HoN chat. Most people who are both savvy and destructive are intelligent and self respectful enough to lower themselves to the average.

Just because a bunch of tards are led by a select few smart ones, it doesn't mean i've any respect for the tards. If i suddenly started following /b/ hourly, would you have to improve your respect of me? If you already think I'm a tard, i don't get free admittance just because my leader is smart do i?

Hon is the best game and value for money to be released since Orange Box IMO. unlimited playability with just 1 map, imagine when other maps come out, it's going to dominate

Despite what you may think, i don't actually enjoy offending people. But I don't just sit there and take somoene's blame when it's not warranted, i deflect and create irrational strawman arguments :)

As for greazy, i'd never want to call him a /b/tard! If he visits 4chan then the more power to him, he doesn't go around talking about various meme's like his life depends on it, so i'd hate to imply that he's a tard, i'd rather make myself understood than cause an argument (generally). And if he's just trolling me, then meh, happens all the time :P

I still dont get this.

The game is going to go Retail Eventualy, Open beta is just further extending the numbers out to test server loads etc, before final release.

What it matter if its another 2 months 3 months 6 months, at some point it will be Retail.

As others have said my $30 has well and truely been recovered with over 8 days of Full Ingame Time.

When it goes Retail the freeloaders will be gone.

You mean the people full knowingly pre-purchasing a game in CLOSED beta?

Also a worthy note that this game still has anywhere between 30,000 - 50,000 people online at any given time of the day, in closed beta. Interesting to see what numbers it brings when open begins.

open beta will be good demo. i think they have done a great job... at least ppl can get the feel of it before it comes out and then they can see if its worth them buying it.... I did that with battlefield as well. I got beta key from Ausgamers. Then i loved the game so much after a couple of hours of play and pre-purcahsed the game on steam.
