The first DLC for
Modern Warfare 2 seems unaffected by all the hubbub going on between Infinity Ward and Activision at the moment, and is set to grace the Xbox Live Marketplace at the end of this month for 1200 MS points (around $20 Australian), and will apparently be exclusive to the platform for 30 days.
"Stimulus Package" will contain five maps, three new and two from the first Modern Warfare - Overgrown and Crash (which have apparently been given a cosmetic facelift, but are fundamentally the same). The three new maps feature in snow, a thunderstorm and a derelict apartment block.

So, you can't just drop custom maps into a MW2 maps directory or stream the map from the server like any other game?
The server needs to phone the mothership to make sure you've purchased the map or something?

Singling out 2 of your maps before launch and labeling them DLC is different. At least IW withheld these maps from launch to make cash off em later, price is still way over the top.

what for? I'm too busy with BC2 to give a rat's.

what happened to the days of releasing editors and stuff so people can make their own
i guess without dedicated servers it has no real community anyway

Because Activision can't charge the consumer for consumer created content.
My understanding is that the new battle.net will allow users to sell their custom content on battle net, that's how it should be done.

My understanding is very surprised at your understanding.

"Blizzard are to go one step further though, and creative Battle.Net users will be able to sell maps on the system as either 'free' or 'premium content'. Battle.net users will also be able to browse maps and even rate and comment on them within the Battle.Net system. Blizzard have said they are hoping for mod makers to use the game engine to create full game modifications like we have seen with Counter Strike, these are the sort of creations they are wanting to see sold as premium content."

Considering I see parts of the MP maps from the first modern warfare in MW2 I guess it was only a matter of time before they got totally lazy and just put the entire things in there.
Check out the room on estate under the greenhouse, yeah it's part of the tunnel from the train map in mw2. I forget what the other one was but it's pretty blatant.
e: I wonder what happens when I refuse to buy them, will it do some kind of funky auto map download like every other game on the net or will I just get kicked out of the game for not having the map. Only time will tell!

iWhoop,
would be quite funny if every time a server switched to a new map every player just dropped.
I will laugh when the dlc for the game with the "biggest launch in entertainment history" sells less than a million copies. Yep thats my guess.

Kind of like how no one was going to buy the game initially?

So the majority of core gamers I think is quite unsatisfied with MW2 and thus will not be buying the dlc, so
their main sales will have to come from the casual market which as I mentioned don't believe really buy dlc
so we shall see.

Yeah I swore black & blue I wasn't going to buy it, then I borrowed it & loved the single player & the little side missions so decided to get my own copy. It's actually quite awesome when you use the party thingo & play with a bunch of mates, especially when you all work well as a team.
I do feel like a dirty little consumer whore :(
