The popular Linux distribution Ubuntu hit a new release last week, with version 9.10 (or 'Karmic Koala', if you keep track of them that way) landing on your favourite mirror. Check out the official site for a quick overview of what Ubuntu can do for you.

We've only got the i386 Desktop ISO available (also with a handy .NZB file for those who use Usenet and want blisteringly fast downloads), but your local ISP mirror probably has a copy as well - BigPond, Internode, Optus and iiNet are a couple examples.

Is there a trick to making ubuntu work with RAID'd drives? I suspect there's other issues since I can't even boot from the live bood disc but would it be getting hung up on the RAID controller even when trying to boot from the cd? (previous version of ubuntu).

Tried it on my girlfriend's MSI Wind, and the wireless was broken. Apparently it's a known issue, which is dumb, since it works on 9.04.

@whoop if you can't even boot the live disc you've got major problems
the live disc doesn't even try to recognise a drive
it creates a ram drive for its temporary use

I'd suggest letting it try to boot for a bit longer then if it gets to the desktop, run the "install ubuntu" icon from the desktop and see if it recognises your raid array

The distribution itself might not, but I'm fairly sure the kernel would be detecting and initialising controllers upon booting from the livecd.

yeah which is why i suggested letting it boot for a bit longer

Installed in vmware, had all sorts of issues getting vmware tools installed. Ended up installing open-vm-tools instead which has fixed my resolution, now just need to get copy/paste working between my host OS and the VM.

It's really strange because the computer I tried to run it on was my old main PC and as far as I can remember the only thing I've changed on it is I added 2 drives and set them to RAID and afterwards ubuntu just refused to boot.

Maybe I'll give this latest one a go and maybe leave it a little bit longer. There's a bunch of cool programs I found but they only run on linux and I've been itching to try them out :(

This release is wicked I might add. Running the NBR on my eee and it's quick and works perfectly out of the box. 9.04 had issues in the beginning but this is awesome.

Anyopne have a Bigpond ONLY sources.lst they can give me so it only uses that to look for mirrors for updates? Or what can I add in/remove there exactly.

Faster boot up, preferred the 9.04 boot screen tho :\

Smooth upgrade.

trying the 64bit ver atm.

- oddly, the 64bit installer doesn't see my WD 36gig Raptors at all (raided or standalone).. though it sees my Seagate 250 and 1tb just fine.. updated all firmware, mobo bios, etc. no change. the Raptors worked fine (standalone) on Jaunty Jackalope (32bit). I've installed a dual boot to the 250gig for now.

- The Ubuntu Software Center doesn't have the update for Flash (though it does in the 32bit version?). I had to cp libflashplayer.so into /usr/lib/mozilla/pluggins from the command line to get Flash working. I hope they update that soon.

- some hard drives aside.. all my hardware works out of the box! w00t! I didn't think my SB Live 24bit was gonna fly! The NVidia 260 works nicely (though I haven't loaded up a game yet.)

- VLC installed easily from the USC. niiiice

- file sharing is a breeze (*edit* can't mount stuff on a ntfs volume. gotta fix that)

- Transmission 1.75 torrent client just works. I'll give the Azureus one a bash, but this is working atm so I'm happy. I miss uTorrent though. Someone suggested 'rtorrent + rutorrent' which I'll have a go off later as well.

- flash games only work properly in FF so far... grrrr. Opera installed like a breeze inside 30 seconds though. YouTube and the usual stuff works fine.

- hehe.. they make FileZilla for *nix. niiiice

- I still haven't got TF2 or L4D working yet.. it's a work in progress

- still no RAR support out of the box? why god why?

- NeoRouter works out of the box.. w00t!

that's really about it for now. I guess I'll run into a game that'll only run on Windows soon so I've got a Win install sitting nearby for when the time comes. It'll prolly be L4D2 methinks :/

nice wrapup...

RAR is such a PITA compression system. I want it to die already and get replaced by 7z.

but 7z sucks, or did they fix that extraction issue where it used COPY instead of MOVE or whatever.

I think you're describing an implementation issue in a specific gui version maybe?

Actually rather than make a glib comment about why RAR sucks, I'll explain ACTUALLY why there's no support out of the box - because RAR is proprietary, closed software that is not distributed under a 'free' license.

One thing i found strange is that they removed vi by default, I've not had to install that in ubuntu before. nano is completely balls imo.

rofls our new overlords at work are 7z people, we're winrar, gz and compress people:

i cant see any advantages at all with 7z (other than maybe it handles large file sizes better)

Transmission/Transmission-daemon is all you need and it has an epic web interface for loading up linux iso's while your at work!

7z is great, it's fast as and gets awesome compression. Plus, it's open source, and has an x64 build.

but 7z sucks, or did they fix that extraction issue where it used COPY instead of MOVE or whatever.

This is annoying, yeah, but it only happens when you open an archive in the manager and drag/drop the files to the destination. You can avoid it by right-clicking and choosing "Extract here." Still, it shouldn't have the problem to begin with.

I got ubuntu-9.10-dvd-i386.iso off the telstra mirror, is this supposed to install a GUI by default? I installed it on a VM last night and when it booted it told me there was no x windows installed. Might just have been the stupid automated install feature of the VM software tho because I didn't see one damn menu or option at all throughout the entire installation.

I didn't realise that so thanks for the tip. Will give it another go when I reinstall Windows 7... more legitimately.

it seems I can't open all rar files ... grrr

this has fixed things up for the moment however :)

basically: open terminal and run " sudo apt-get install unrar "

it's all a work in progress it seems =)

yeah Jim I'm thinking there may be an issue with 7Zip and x64 atm eh.

still googling it though

actually I'm thinking that open-rar couldn't handle some of my rars, and 7zip couldn't do it's job since oper-rar was already installed :/

So out of curiosity, what do you do when you get a minor update to a Linux distro? Is it just a patch?

I get an update notification, and say go for it. all done

I'm using this and trying to configure nagios. Works ok with the monitoring on my network but can't for the life of me set up notifications to my exchange email address...my day has been taken up vandalising config files.

Have you installed sendmail or some type of smtp app to allow nagios to send mail to exchange? I've had to do that with a few apps like limesurvey.

I love giving things like ubuntu a bash every now and again. Every 6 months or so i dump on a separate partition some distro and try and get as many things as i use or substitutes to work as possible. Last time i was even able to play source based games just using wine. That was pretty neat. Already most blizzard games have openGL modes allowing wine to run perfectly.

Most of the rest i use my PC for is web browsing and document handling. If it wasn't for games like assassins creed (which i finished again the other day in preparation for assassins creed 2) i wouldn't even have windows.

Also cedega which i used to promote despite the subscription really sucked 6 months ago.

When i go back to windows i still use things like pigin (open source multi IM client) firefox, VLC, openoffice.org etc.

I've got TF2 and L4D running in wine, though L4D gets hammered pretty quickly when a hoard comes along, and that was far from running at full detail. it was nice to see Quake Live runs seamlessly at about 9999fps - though you'd expect that.

I'll use the Win dual boot to play L4D2 and Assassins Creed 2 when they come out..
