Seriously, it's beyond a joke now that we, as adults, are denied games based on trivial oppositions by the OFLC. This time
Risen a RPG by the guys who brought us the Gothic series, has bitten the dust because you smoke an imaginary drug in the game and engage in conversations with prostitutes.
Never mind that last night I watched several anime shorts containing much more graphic and mature content (rated MA15+), because as we all know, games are for kids.
I hate writing about this and I hate that we live in such a repressed country when it comes down to a state of parental awareness and adult decision-making. Get your act together OFLC, really.

The government needs to implement facial recognition and fingerprint ID in everyone's home and link it to the household gaming system.
That way they can release higher rated games and, with everyones details on file in a massive database, the users could log in using their face & fingerprint and the game system (be it xbox, PC, or the WII) would instantly know how old you were and tell you to sod off if you're too young to play it.

What about the backwards fucking contradiction in the laws view of abortion. Its tolerated? but is still not considered legal. What in the fuck... I always thought our laws were pretty reasonable (queensland is one of the worst on most things, drugs and abortion) you read stories from America about the 17 year old kid that fucked his 16 year old girl friend and ends up on the sex offender registry and you think nothing like that could ever happen here. But there really are totally fucked up things going on.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/07/08/2620210.htm (cairns abortion case)
I mean what the fuck. They just allowed sale of RU486 in certain places and at the same time are prosecuting a girl for taking a banned abortion drug. (disparity in laws between states is also pretty fucken weird)

How can you be worried about games censorship when shit as serious as this is going on?

cos it's dumb to focus soley on one issue just because someone deems it more important than other issues
Posted 04:00pm 12/8/09
You think that's bad? Wait until the 'Monetary powers' of the world force us to have RF chips inside of our bodies.
Posted 04:01pm 12/8/09
Because humans and society can multi-task and focus on more than a single issue at a time.
By your logic I should focus 100% on the fact that I have Multiple Sclerosis, blocking out everything else, as its the most 'serious' issue that I personally face. And yet I manage to help raise the kids, run a business and remember my Mother's birthday (usually).
At the risk of sounding rude, the notion you should tunnel focus on an issue because its apparently the most important is a bit dopey really.
Posted 04:24pm 12/8/09
Well, I work in the games industry, and I fill a significant part of my leisure time with games (as I would imagine Steve does, and a lot of people here do), so its an issue that cuts pretty close to home. If I spent my spare time performing abortions, I'm sure I would be much more interested in abortion problems.

I think this would have be my first successful troll and what a nice reaction it was.
My views have been expressed in this thread already, but basically, what Hogfather has said, I agree with. But maybe you'd like to explain to me how playing a game (with mature content or otherwise) is a "basic right"?

Posted 08:25pm 12/8/09
No, no you should not. It's that simple. To live in society, you must abide by its rules. One being, censorship exists.

You may be ok with some prick who thinks he knows all telling you what you can and cant view but I think I'll make that choice myself, besides any banned games can just be bought from overseas, usually for less cash also.
Posted 01:43am 13/8/09
Many people live in societies where there is no censorship and material is released unclassified all the time. These people are called Americans. Are you saying that Australians shouldn`t be entitled to the same rights as Americans? Are Australians too immature? Seriously, whats your take?

Yeh, Americans are awesome!
America, fuck yeh!

'Protect' the lowest common denominator [person/car] in the worst possible weather condition [mentally unstable/rain], and prevent 'unnecessary deaths'.
Doesn't quite work like that which is why its stupid.
Posted 12:53pm 13/8/09
Oh well, i better go source and smoke some real drugs to make up for this opportunity denied by the government. i mean i don't want to miss out on things in life! What if!
-_-
Posted 01:20pm 13/8/09
Actually the hippies in the ACT govt would be fine with that.
Posted 01:23pm 13/8/09
Knock all you want, Americans have more freedom than you do. Maybe you should try to be more like them instead of just knocking and mocking everything thats superior to you.

Tired old stereotype. really really lame. I lived in the US for 3 years and never got shot or saw anyone shot.
btw did you know Australia has the highest rate of violent rape in the world but America is only like 15th in the world in gun violence and rape?
Are Australians too busy raping each other to play games? Are you being raped right now?
Posted 04:28pm 13/8/09
Well I'm convinced, must be a media beat up then.
I'm also very confident that Australia isn't the worst place in the world for violent rape; somewhere unstable like South Africa, Somalia of Zimbabwe would win hands down.
We just actually keep accurate records.

Record keeping trog.
If you're looking at this site:
In some parts of the world its much, much better for a rape victim to shut the fuck up about it. In Australia we regard rape as a violent act against the victim and pursue perps vigorously, so reporting is relatively common.

they do in America too. Yet America has a much much lower rate of rape than Australia. Why is that? Maybe in a society with guns people show more respect to other people?
Also speaking of reporting. I wonder how many American women use guns to stop a rape but then don`t report it because of gray areas on self defence with guns that exist even in America?

Yeh, guns are saving americans from rape...
I'd expect that a lot of rapes in the States go unreported because of religious and privacy/public shame reasons. A large portion of the American people are very strongly religious, they don't call it the "Bible Belt" without good reason.
You'll recall the story recently of an American family who actually disowned their daughter because she was raped.
Rape is an invasive, emotional and difficult crime to prosecute. I wouldn't trust any statistics on incidence due to massively varying reporting rates and veracity of reports themselves. About all we can say with certainty is that its more prevalent in remote areas and definetly more common in areas without law and order.
The idea that a war-torn country like Zimbabwe has almost half the rape rate as Australia is patently absurd. Well, I guess its hard to report that you were raped when you are fucking dead.

are you really trying to sit there and suggest it is the girl's fault if they get raped?
just because women don't want to sleep with you personally doesn't make them stuck up or responsible for rape

Gun violence or rape? Which is it? Only like like like, so they could be like number 1 or like number 5, like like like.
Posted 07:03pm 13/8/09
America isn`t called "the bible belt" you dumbass, its a series of conservative states in America. Americas big cities are very very liberal and look down on religious conservatism. And Australia is plenty Christian aswell. Why do you expect Christians to not report rape? Are you fucking dumb?

its partly their fault. I know so many good guys in Australia that can`t get any except from fat whales because Aussie bitches are so stuck up they won`t even talk to most guys. Ever since that Aussie btich married that Danish prince every btich in Australia wants to be the same.
