For a game that hasn't even been formally announced yet, Heroes of Newerth sure does seem to have a lot of buzz. One of our favourite indie developers, S2 Games (creators of the Savage gamess) have sent us along a batch of beta keys for their latest in-development title.

We're not allowed to talk about much since it's all still under a strict Non-disclosure agreement, but for those not already in-the-know, Heroes of Newerth is a new strategy title, strongly based on the popular and incredibly addictive Warcraft 3 mod Defense of the Ancients, more commonly known as DotA.

Head over to our beta promotion page to snag a key, but you better be quick as they're likely to be snapped up fast.

If you gain access to the beta, please respect the NDA and refrain from posting media and information from the game outside of the official Heroes of Newerth beta forums.

for those on caps its nice and small 250mb, no patch's after that afaik, but avg patch size is < 30mb.

the game frustrates me to no end (not so much as dota) and i cant help keep coming back.

Its horrendously addictive. Once you stop sucking (being a 'bad' in dota speak apparently) its a lot of fun. The abuse level in pub games reduces dramatically.

I'm getting into playing support characters at the moment, particularly Nymph.

There are features on the way which will hopefully stop people from being so abusive. Also after the game is released then 'noob servers' will actually be noob servers instead of pros with low stats that abuse everyone.

You check real noobs from stat whores by looking at their stats. Real noobs have very little to no Creep denied counts. If it is greater 5 or something, chances are they know how to play.

its a time eater, most matches take between 30 minutes and an hour, faster if easy mode is enabled (more money quicker)

Its a multiplayer beta, the learning curve is brutal and it won't hold your hand. The test is really targetted at the moment for people who know how to play DoTA or can handle self-directed learning.

Read the forum guides for info on how to play.

I had a few games and I have never played DOTA before and I found it relatively easy to pick up.

Just expect to get pwned and try to learn as much as possible in the first few games.

Given it a go.
The Night Crawler hero or whatever it is just seems stupidly overpowered from what little I've really played.

Permanent stealth, teleporting behind/right next to enemy every ~5 seconds or so from what seems like just about anywhere on the map...
Given 90% of the games I played I had a 200-500ping, it also meant death before you'd even know the player was there...
Or, they'd run away and become invisible again 3 feet from your character....
Not a wonder everyone was spamming to play the hero in every game...

Although I was forced as arachna against the POS - even if webbed/spider stung theyd just teleport ontop of you over and over making your only saving moves.... useless.

Otherwise, it was a little addictive, but the amount of 'build' or 'buy' paths was a tad confusing and/or annoying.

Riki (night crawler guy) us a one trick pony though. If you get wards and dust he's in a lot of trouble, especially in a team fight as he's fragile. Like Scout he tends to be shunned as players get better as his counters are very obvious, and aside from surprise sex to enemies doesn't offer a log to a group really.

HoN us a game of counters.
