Your fancy phone just got even fancier today with the release of v3.0 iPhone 3G firmware update.
Head over to apple.com to pick up the 250MB patch that boasts a pretty large swag of improvements and new capabilities. Here's a taste: Check the Apple site for more details and if that's not enough for you, learn how you can potentially do even more with your iPhone in AusGamers Guide to iPhone Jailbreaking (nb: Jailbreaking is not presently available for v3.0 but support for the new version is inevitably not too far away).

Not 100% on this but have had a few reports at work about it today ....
Posted 09:00am 18/6/09
I can host the update if someone wants to FTP it up, seems like apple is getting raped
Posted 09:07am 18/6/09
I was a little excited about the shake to shuffle, but it seems next to useless: it only works while you either have the iPod open or while you have the controls open while the phone is locked. That is, the skip button has to be visible on screen to be able to shake to shuffle.
And copy only seems to work in text boxes???? I don't seem to be able to copy parts of peoples posts.

I just hope it fixes Exchange Push - I would have to fucking reset the thing a few times a day because it would just suddenly stop working.
They've said improvements to calendar, can anyone elaborate on these ??
And regarding tethering - which carriers are currently supported? And BT drivers? Do they just come with itunes ?

As for calendars, so far I've noticed you can send invitations from the calendar app. Hopefully that means you can also receive them. I use google exchange thingo to sync calendars and contacts and I have had no worries so far.

Also, Billy, copy paste works in websites. You have to tap and hold on soemthing.

Optus definately dont... I found a page in settings that says "Set up Internet Tethering" and when you press it it says "Call OPTUS to set up Tethering".
Meh, I wouldn't have used it anyway.
You don't need BT drivers for the iPhone, you just need a BT dongle with the associated software on your PC. Then you just search for a device and pair them together.
I WANT MY APPS, SHAZAM HAS BEEN UPDATED FFS, BUT I CANT EVEN DOWNLOAD IT!

That's because they are charging for tethering... it seems alot of telco's are doing it.
Posted 09:49am 18/6/09
Wha? I doubt that'd be the case. They didn't mention any incompatibility with iPod touch models.

my 3g iphone is up for grabs on ebay right now even
Posted 09:53am 18/6/09
I haven't called them yet but if that's the case I PITY THE FOOL who receives me on the other end when I get through to Optus.
So far the only thing that doesn't work is Flight Control and I'm pretty upset about it, only found out when I sat down on the tram faced with my 20min trip into work without guiding those poor little planes to safety!@

Phew it is working now, it was possibly caused by some apps (not FC) sitting in the background still waiting to be updated.

if you JB you can replace the carrier settings with one that allows tethering to occur.. and looks like you can JB 3.0 already!Turns out you don't need to JB but run iTunes and select the carrier file manually. I'm trying this out now and will edit this post if it works.

Tethering on Optus!
If the mods delete the below then PM and I'll give you instructions on how to get tethering working on Optus.
* mods feel free to delete this section if you think it's not right to be here*
1) Download this file
2) Email the file "optus config/OptusTetherv1.mobileconfig" to yourself, open it up on your iPhone and click the attachment and install the settings.
3a) Mac users: instructions are in the "optus config/README" file
3b) PC users: open up CMD and go into your iTunes folder and run this;
"iTunes.exe /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1"
4) Open iTunes and shift-click the "Check for updates" button in your iPhone device.
5) Locate the "optus config/Optus_au.ipcc" file and double click this - this will update the carrier settings on your iPhone.
6) Do it again (well at least I had to)
7) The enable tethering option should now appear.
Thanks to this bloke on WP for the instructions.

Posted 11:17am 18/6/09
I tried with BT on my Win7 laptop and it's almost like a problem with the BT drivers and not tethering. Normally on this laptop (D63) the bluetooth light will shine in all its blue brightness to indicate bluetooth is enabled but I get nothing with Win7. However, I have the BT icon and can go in and dick around with settings but it feels as if the radio isn't enabled.

Looks like i'll be sticking to 3.0 beta then!
Free tethering ftw.
EDIT: oh nice find TicMan, I'll check that out tomorrow.

Seriously though, how old is the 1st gen touch now? How long do you think its reasonable for them to continue to support it with OS updates?
Oshit did I just defend teh Apple? Fuck, someone gimme a bckpunch quick.
Edit: Oh, it was only September 2007?! Fuck Apple. Douches, seriously, its not even two years..

I don't seem to remember any other phone manufacturers doing what Apple does. Yes they might be long-overdue features, but a phone you buy in 2007 is a phone that keeps getting new features, access to apps etc.
If you wanted any more features in a Nokia or Sony, you need to buy a whole new phone.
Oh and 1G iPod touch should definitely be supported by 3.0 update.
There's a blog here

I know the iPhone is cool and fun, but at the end of the day the freedom shit is important to me so I'm going to put my money where my big mouth is.

Only problem I've had with cut/paste is that when I wrote a long email, trying to scroll up and down the email was hard because it kept highlighting text.

Updated to 3.0 just now and I no longer have a settings icon... lulz
I can still get to it by doing a search though, weirdness.

Tethering is really great - no more worrying about network connections when demo'ing at a client's premises. It just works for me without hassles too, I may stay with Voda instead of my planned switch if Optus are jerks about it.
Spotlight being the left scroll form Home irked me for a while, I had been used to being able to scrol-scroll-scroll left to get to home and not overshoot. I find I use the Home-Home shotcut more now to avoid overshooting when heading to Home.
Cut Copy Paste takes getting used to and to avoid mis-highlight when you want to scroll, again I was used to being able to "rest" my finger before scrolling. But it definelty works well and Ive used it a fair bit.
Landscape keyboard in more apps is loverly but I need to remember its available more.
Voice memos was fun to play around with the kids.
Posted 01:15pm 18/6/09
Landscape keyboard I just forget about, copy/paste I don't really need to use much, MMS is something I never use, and I never have to use Search usually or I just have the habit of just finding it myself.
In my case the features are useful, but only when I need them which isn't often, so bit boring on the firmware front. The apps in 3.0 is whats going to be great.
I would actually like the 3G S simply for the speed and video capture.

This is my telstra 7 Series USB Adapter
Posted 02:38pm 18/6/09
We've got a ticket in with Apple about it. Seems to be an issue with certificates or something along those lines.
Posted 02:43pm 18/6/09
How is 120k per second "useless"? Were you intending to use phone tethering as your main internet conection or something? Sounds fine for basic use...

(Tethered iPhone via Bluetooth)
Shame I don't get a reliable 3G connection at home ... I have wifi at home though duh :P
Posted 02:52pm 18/6/09
I tested this out this morning by recording a meeting with my supervisors. The recording went for 40minutes, and seemed to work fine. However, when trying to play the file back, it seems to want to load the whole thing, which took too long for me to bother with - instead, I thought I'd wait until I got home and transfer the file via iTunes. Then I tried to rename the file... not sure what I did, but the entire file seems to have been deleted. FUCKING GREAT. So I'll revert back to using the $2.50 app I have for recording until I play with Apple's a bit more.

That 1mbit Telstra connection will work anywhere, but optus won't even get .1 everywhere

you dont have to rush out and buy new hardware, but you knew the ipod touch had to pay for updates when you bought it .. so thats your own fault
if you had an iphone, any version - you would have the new version free of charge

how about in the scenario every mac user about to experience with OS X?
$29 to upgrade to the new version
I'm sure everyone who loves their mac will probably hand that over no worries, because its cheap in the grand scheme of things
I don't think microsoft will be giving out Windows 7 for $29 anytime soon

As for OS X update (Snow Leopard), most of it is refinements and major operating system optimisation. They've also removed a whole shitload of PowerPC crap which a lot of people never use (on Intel Macs), introduced OpenCL standard (GPGPU style API), created a highly optimised multithreading framework and completely gone 64-bit.
Basically, itll make your current Mac faster, and give you back up to 6gb (so they claim).
For 29 dorrar, thats a pretty good update in my book. The problem is that most users won't know what Snow Leopard is about (mostly behind the scenes stuff) so its obvious why the price to update is so small.
The difference between Windows 7 and Snow Leopard is that Windows 7 is fixing Vista, whereas Snow Leopard is merely making Leopard faster and more refined. That being said, Windows 7 kicks ass.

Posted 11:01pm 18/6/09
Posted 11:09pm 18/6/09
But it's not a fix for Vista, because Vista isn't broken.. It's just better than Vista in a number of ways.
It's kind of cute how the apple guys list the speed of opening the disk tray as a highlight of snow leopard though.
Posted 11:13pm 18/6/09
Multithreading architecture? WTF is that..
OpenCL???

However, it would be cool, maybe Apple should create another consumer appliance using iPhone OS.
Posted 11:16am 19/6/09
How much RAM? Vista is a bit of a glutton for memory unfortunately, and some vendors (or possibly MS themselves?) were a bit optimistic with how much ram they could get away with.
My wife's low-end Dell laptop just didn't perform that well with Vista either.
Upping the RAM to 1.5G helped some, but installing 7 was the killer fix. I think you can tweak Vista's performance for lower-end hardware a fair bit by turing off a bunch of services etc.

Do you need to elevate to perform admin functions like you do in Windows or Unix / Linux?
Posted 11:36am 19/6/09
Posted 11:53am 19/6/09
You do similar to Unix's sudo command in the back end, since OS X is based on BSD Unix. I think you just get a pop up to put in a password to do certain thing or something.
Posted 11:54am 19/6/09
Posted 11:56am 19/6/09
sudo is the Unix command to allow admin privs to binaries
But in Mac OS X it'll just ask you for your password if it needs to do privileged stuff.
Doesn't happen very often. Sometimes when installing apps (through an installer).
Posted 12:14pm 19/6/09
Vista was so awkward about it because of the number of instances where elevation was required more than anything else. After about ten years or so of 99% of users having local admin it seemed that everywhere you turned something needed to be elevated.
I still see itoccassionally when I'm writing software - my brain will turn off and I'll accidentally attempt to open a HKLM value in read write, or casually write out to a file in program files by using the module path.
The decision to give users having local admin by default back in the day really was a bit dopey. I'm guessing it was driven by a desire to have all those 95 kernel apps work in win 2000 and avoid the dramas over UAC in Vista.
Posted 12:24pm 19/6/09
I lol'd, that password prompt = sudo routines

Posted 12:54pm 19/6/09
Must be a mac thing? I reckon maybe half of the computer users I've encountered can manage to open a command prompt and bash in a command.
Posted 01:11pm 19/6/09
Posted 01:34pm 19/6/09
Posted 02:01pm 19/6/09
I honestly don't think that 99% of Windows users would be unable to get that task done. Maybe you really never need to go near a command prompt, its possible given the tight coupling of hardware and software.
Its probably on balance a bad thing. The number of times I've seen people who have no fucking clue be quite happy bringing up regedit...
