The internet is a funny place. It's either wrought with misinformation, speculation and rumour, or factual authoritative information; both of the official and leaked kind. The latter has seen the invariable announcement of the existence of cult classic, The Secret of Monkey Island, as an Xbox Live Arcade release thanks to a German ratings board.

Since the gaming community at large have run with the info, the official link on the USK rating board has been pulled, but not soon enough for us to get our saliva glands gushing.

Of course it would make sense to release such an iconic title on XBLA, and given the original source of the information, we're filing this one as pretty much confirmed.

Am I in the too young bracket for this one?

!!!!!!!!

Thank god they've got with Secret, not 3 or 4. The worst part is that it's another XBLA game I'd happily buy, as opposed to very very few retail/full games that appeal. Wierd.

Would've liked to seen it come out for the Wii's VC or on DSi, but can't complain one way or another!

Oh No! After spending so many intervening years playing uninspired games - if this is true, then there goes the social life again on a classic.

Oh man, so many hours spent on this game.

Totally worth it.

Isn't this game famous for shitty puzzles, ones where you're screwed if you didn't pick up some item 3 levels ago which now is blocked off?

Nah. There is no getting stuck or dying in monkey island games.

Not sure how this would work on a x360 controller, I think I'll stick to the PC version and SCUMM-VM :)

You're thinking of anything by Sierra or Infocom. Pretty much anything from that era that allowed you to put the game into an unwinnable state.

New & Old Monkey Island adventures in the works:

The rumors of a remake of the original Monkey Island for Xbox Live Arcade are true, but it gets much better, as LucasArts and Telltale team up to deliver all-new episodic Monkey Island adventures.

Starting this July, Telltale will be releasing Tales of Monkey Island, a five-episode monthly adventure game series for the PC and WiiWare featuring the further adventures of Guybrush Threepwood and nemesis, LeChuck, as Guy accidentally releases a voodoo pox that threatens to turn the swashbuckling men of the Caribbean into pirate monsters, which is the only thing worse than just plain pirates.

Meanwhile, LucasArts is internally developing The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, which is a completely update version of the 1990 original, complete with new graphics, a remastered musical score, and full voice-overs. FULL VOICE-OVERS.

This could either be very good news, or very sad news, depending on how they handle it. The Secret of Monkey Island is due out this summer on Xbox Live Arcade and the PC.

Mixed feelings, but new Monkey Island is possibly too good to be true. Hopefully it'll be a success and they can get onto re-releasing Full Throttle (and finish the sequel!).

Bollocks! The Curse of Monkey Island is my favourite, it definitely deserves to be rated with 1 and 2.

4 was alright, the 3D ruined it though... Grim Fandango was badass, Monkey 4, not so good.
