There has been much speculation regarding Blizzard's unannounced MMO - would it revive an old franchise, would it expand an existing one... or are we in for something entirely new?

Well, a community manager for Blizzard (guys who basically look after fans and forums) has outwardly confirmed the game is an all-new IP (Intellectual Property):
"We have nothing to advertise for the new MMO because it's a shell of a game thus far. It'll be a brand new franchise, which means the lore, art, and game play are being developed entirely from scratch. It's an overwhelming process, but a process through which we excel. Our track record supports this."
So looks like no StarCraft or Diablo expanded game-world, nor will they revive the Lost Vikings (bastards). But it is good news to finally hear Blizzard are flexing their creative muscle once more.

Go into competition with yourself, just like a Blizzard

If its fantasy then yeah its competition with themselves. If its not, ala, futuristic or some shit, then it'll cater for those of us who don't like running around playing with elves' balls and listening to tiddly winks fairy music.

Nah, they'll likely go into competition with CCP. The world has enough fantasy/old-world games/MMOs.

This was confirmed by Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime in '08. http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2008/10/qa-blizzard-ceo/

Granted he does not say specifically that it is not Starcraft or Diablo related, but he may as well have.

I'm pretty sure Blizzard won't cock it up and just cannibalise their own market trog!

Remember that WoW massively expanded the western audience for MMOs, while admittedly beating the shit out the existing players.

Consider also the precedent that StarCraft and WarCraft are independently successful RTS lines from Blizzard.

Not to mention that even if they just took half the however-many-million current WoW players and got them to lay down another hundred bucks for the new game it would be an immediate profit maker.

If they want to compete with CCP then they will definitely need to think about less shards and larger servers. EvE is the way it is because of the large player population. It would take years to come up with something as epic as EvE.

Disclaimer noted, but you do realise that in software development time can be interchanged with money to a large degree?

Blizzard (or at least their parent) is heavily weighed down with massive piles of fat stacks from WoW revenue, even when we consider what their massive server costs must be like.

Fair enough but if you investigate into eve, they actually have done some serious network engineering stuff. They are technically a Tier 2 Internet Provider now or something. They are 64bit server side and have Stackless IO (IP of CCP).

CCP have worked on reducing lag and increasing the PCU (Peak Concurrent Users) which is something like 54 thousand people online at once. Combat of over 1000 people in a single fleet battle, Market and contract systems with HUGE numbers of transactions being done every day.

This makes eve what it is. Anything that does a WoW version of EvE will just fail unless they have a single shard.

I saw a video interview linked from the WoW forums and one of the big guys in charge of Blizzard said they had a billion dollars saved that can be used for whatever they want. Also said they weren't in debt either.

Anyway, whatever they make I hope it's just as awesome as their other stuff.

I'm betting it will be

StarWarEveCraft

A futuristic sci fantasy where Noobs will mingle with Leets to battle on a plant names HtorezA. There will be two factinons (red vs blue) and you will have to pay $20 a month so that they can work out the bugs, have lag and wait have people spamming the Trade Channel.

Expansions will include The Burning Blood Wars and will be set in Space.

....Jesus I can't wait!

Why don't they buy out the Fallout MMO and make it awesome!

Even if it's set in space, I can't see it being anything like Eve. Eve is in a genre all of its own, and it's not one that I see Blizzard having any sort of interest in. I hope it is a sci-fi MMO though, because there's not a lot out there (other than Eve, which I don't really want to play) to fill this void, and I'm aching for a good MMO to play. So damn sick of fantasy.

Yeah, WoW can only go so far. Wouldn't surprise me if they release another xpac before their new MMO comes out. Hopefully it's nothing to do with the Emerald Dream and more with the South Sea stuff. Isn't one of the main dragons hiding out on an island inhabited by goblins?

I'll tell you what.

They're going to get a massive fan base whether the game is good or not.

Because it's blizzard.

They should spend all their money on R&D on getting something that hasn't been done before that would rock like nothing else. Blizzard will probably not want to have another MMO that is anything like WOW. APB looks cool but can you imagine a city full of people like that? :S

You people seem confused about what Blizzard does. They don't do new. None of their games have been "new".

They take other stuff and refine it and kill that category for anyone else with the quality of their work.

You work as a lowly blizzard employee in a modern environment and see shit all of the massive profits being reaped by your gaming supergiant.

How is that different than working anywhere else? Unless you own the company, you're not going to see shit all of the massive profits.

clearly you should pass down the profits to the little shit kickers in your company.

Yeah, I agree with this. Eve is "special". Like someone else said, it's spreadsheets in space, and that only appeals to a select playerbase. Blizzard will come up with something more appealing to the general public... like Earth & Beyond, but better supported & realised.

And I would lurv that!

Haha so naive!

The best an end-of-line employee can hope for is that improved conditions (fresh fruit platters and bean bags and shit like that) come your way if the company makes mega bucks.

Direct profit-sharing isn't a very good way to run a company IMO, and at the extreme inhibits growth and development, which is usually in the endline employee's interest anyway.

No, Activision was merged with Blizzard - Vivendi SA (the frenchies) are still the majority shareholder of the new conglomerate.

Just because its MMO does it have to be a MMORPG? Do you think they will try to introduce a different type of MMO? Not some sim/rpg?

I mean this would be the best way to capture a new audience.

Although I can't think of anything that'd work well.
