GameSpot have heard from the OFLC that spooky World War 1 game Necrovision has been refused classification in Australia:
The Board specifically called out excessive blood spray and the ability to continue to inflict damage on bodies as key reasons for the banning. "When the player shoots an enemy combatant, a large volume of blood spray results and the enemy may be dismembered or decapitated. Injury detail is high with pieces of flesh seen flying from bodies when shot or a high level of wound detail visible on bodies. Post mortem damage occurs when bodies are shot resulting in blood spray, dismemberment and decapitation," the Board said in a statement to GameSpot AU.
Whether or not the game will be toned down by the developers to meet the OFLC requirements for an MA15+ game is not known yet.

You can check out some of the horrifying screenshots on our game page (note: the gore appears to be missing in these ones).

I'll remember to use that excuse if the government introduces the draft ...

From the trailer it seems most of the enemies are undead/monsters. Why is this still a problem?

I've noticed in Left 4 Dead that you can't keep inflicting damage once the body is on the ground, basically as soon as the zombie is dead. Maybe that was a similar concern.

I'm constantly frustrated by the lack of an R18+ rating on interactive computer media.

Next they'll say the game discriminates against zombies...

So why does this get banned, but fallout 3 got through fine? That was extremely violent, you could continue shooting and dismember dead bodies, when you would headshot someone big chunks of flesh, eyeballs, etc would fly past. Can't see this being any worse.

I've been told by other publishers, it's about the process. Dark Sector, for example, was sent to the OFLC, not demoed with contextual narrative by a demoer. So, a bunch of people get a game to play and mark for classification and literally have no idea about playing games or why you need to tear a zombie's head off (it's to keep them from coming back, duh).

So bigger companies, or pubs who've had experience dealing with the negative OFLC prepare their controlled demos with absolution. That's why certain games can get through easily. Say, Dead Space for example, where you can continue to stomp on dead bodies, splattering the area and dismembering them long after they're dead.

So all you have to do is go in there with your own Demo guy and Set gore to Low beforehand? then you can avoid stomping on heads and the OFLC wont know any better?

Sweet system we have going there.

Pretty much I guess that would work. I suppose though if heaps of people complained about it after release (like those Australian Family Association chumps) then it might cause the game to get re-evaluated (just like I guess what would happen if it was patched after release and the content changed in a material way).

Well then, lets not bring it to the OFLC's attention that their system is flawed. Otherwise those game mentioned above may also have been banned. Then we would be forced to play Barbies Dream Horse or something.

err so what about fallout 3 where you can dismember dead bodies (who unlike this game are humans) yet the only problem they had with F3 were the drug references, nothing about the violence.

Just how inconsistent are these people?

Except when you classify a game you sign a legal document basically saying you are telling the truth about the classifiable elements. A dodgy publisher might try it but I doubt any of the majors would. You build up a relationship with the OFLC board and if you tried something like that I expect you would then get hammered on every subsequent submission - its just not worth it.

When I did demos for the board (I haven't done any for a number of years but I doubt the process has changed) I'd show all the most high impact elements, but being there gives you a chance to explain the context and any consequences of the actions. If you just send in a tape you don't get that chance.

Who Dosn't want to cut the head off a nazi or 2? I know I do!
Oh i shouldn't say that nazi's are people to. Love the consistancy our classification department has when it comes to games yet when they classify a movie you can watch rapage pillage and plunder to your hearts content and thats fine whats the diff your still interacring with the media. All I can say is does anyone like the oily rubber glove of the classification department. I know I do........n't.

hm, its kind of hard to enforce a ban these days, with all the p2p, torrents and what not it would be pretty much impossible. the OFLC need to move along with the times add an 18+ or 21+ rating for games. banning a game in one country when its avaliable to the rest of the world is a pretty futile act.

downloading games illegally is wrong, im simply saying that if someone really wanted a banned/illegal game, im no expert, but who could really stop them?

just stating the obvious.

I dont think that's what he was getting at. Think what he meant was that its stupid to put a ban on something when its so easily accessed by other means ie p2p.

I think we should just abolish all rating systems because they dont work.

It's not the OFLCs fault (per say). They voted back in 2001 for an R18+. They required a unanimous decision from the state attorney generals. All bar 1 voted yes. Mr Michael Atkinson, SA AG. He holds some pretty strong religious and moral views against R18+ games and wants to "protect the children".

My issue is, I'm of the opinion many games at the moment getting MA15+ SHOULD be R18. A lot of the zombie games, Fall Out maybe.. GTA series etc. At the moment, Mrs Jones has no major issue buying little 10yr old Timmy GTA4 because "meh, it's only 15, he's 10, close enough". Slap a R18+ sticker on it instead and it might make them think about it.

But, of course no matter how hard I scream or how many letters I write to Mike no friends (5 and counting), he wont even reply.
