Trog's long-loved Wolfenstein series gets the preview treatment today after he was invited to a hands-off controlled demo of the game from id Community Manager, Peter Sokal at this year's GDC in San Francisco.

So will the Raven Soft-developed Wolfenstein update live up to the series' long-lasting legacy, or is it simply too late to revive this classic franchise amidst the rest of the commercially viable first-person gaming market?

For Trog's full report, hit up this link, and if you haven't seen the latest screens or trailers, be sure to check out our Wolfenstein game page.

An awesome stealth/action game focusing strictly on a BJ broaching a single castle would be all this series needs. No need for magic, he could just run into creepy occultist stuff during his infiltration, and like the first title, have him either escaping from prison and infiltrating for some legit reason...

Gameplay-wise: iron sights are a new addition into the game, offering improved accuracy when you're in a firefighter. There's also a big visual rocking effect as you're sprinting - your gun comes up across your chest and you can't fire (similarly to Call of Duty), which will no doubt affect how people move around in the game (both in single and multiplayer).

This makes me sad, both of those gameplay elements are very Call of Duty. If I wanted to play Call of Duty then I'd play... Call of Duty!
Also, MP involving the Veil makes me worry, but I'm happy to give it a chance!

Initial negatives aside, the PC version not being a port makes me happy! :D

It reminded me a LOT of Call of Duty. A lot.

In that case, why would they lie like this?
"We know what the Wolfenstein fans are expecting", said Sokal when pressed.

Edit: on second thoughts, he really doesn't promise to actually deliver what the fans are expecting, so maybe he's just giving us all a big middle finger with that comment. :P

well the single player campaigin from RTCW wasn't that amazing anyway (though it was decent enough). It's really the multiplayer that gives us the happy memories of the old game.

Not going to panic about the MP just yet, if we recall the SP+MP of RtCW had little in common, the veil being in MP is an obvious concern but again I think it will come down to a promod or osp or something to make the game what it can be. Although I admit I am a little nervous at this point.
