Battlefield 1943 Announced

Just when you started to get worried that no-one had announced a World War 2 shooter for a while - Electronic Arts have announced Battlefield 1943, a new title in the Battlefield series, via the simple expedient of just putting up a website for it. A Higher resolution version of the debut trailer and the first two screenshots can now be found locally on AusGamers.

The information available so far indicates that the game is coming for Xbox Live, PlayStation Arcade, and PC - 'for download', those last two words tacked on somewhat ominously. Certainly sounds like its been developed as a cross-platform title, so it will be interesting to see how this compares to the glory days of Battlefield 1942.

The announcement blurb from the game reveals that much like the recent Call of Duty World at War, 1943 will focus on the WWII Pacific Campaign. You can read the full feature-list over on our game page

Ha madness. I remember playing BF1942 back in the day. That was such a great game. Especially Desert Combat wiht the helichoppers.

I'm not paying any attention to this game until they release dedicated server information for it, and I advise everyone else to ask loudly on their forums what's happening about that, or else we won't be playing it

I didn't think this was a problem on PC's. I thought it was only the console EA games (eg BF:BC) that had massive lag issues (I gave up on it because of this). Which is a shame because it was awesome fun online.

I'll probably get this, 1942 was awesome, you could actually dogfight with the planes as they didn't go at million miles an hour and doing bombing runs on tanks couldn't be beaten.

1942 was an awsome game, and still is. I played that game till the wee hours of the morning every night until my eyes bled, actually it was DC, but sometimes vanilla.

Is there any mention of it being released outside of north America?

Is it going to be a Pay-for-advantage game?

Will there be ISP provided dedicated servers?

What's the player cap?

Are there going to be pointless pay-for-access addons to divide the online audience?

Excitement meter remaining at zero for a bit longer yet

One of the guys from Kotaku got to play this at the New York Comic-con and did a write up about it, sounds pretty interesting. Particularly:

Battlefield 1943: Pacific is a download only, multiplayer game for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC. The game, while new, is essentially a high-def remake of Battlefield 1942, and focuses more on pickup and play style gameplay.

The game is scheduled for release this summer with an expected price point between US$15-$20.

apparently it only has those 3 maps, and its only 24players, 12v12. so its gonna be good, but not much content really to keep it going unless they release it

In that same article on kotaku though, the DICE guys said that if its popular when it comes out, they'll make more content.

Looking forward to this one, but yeah hope they release updates for more players and maps. Most likely limited to 24 players as they have not optimised their netcode for larger games with a fully destructable environment. Thats just a wild guess.
