Microsoft have today lowered the price of the Xbox 360 in Australia in the lead up to the all-important Christmas Holiday sales period. You can now pick up the Xbox 360 Arcade Package for a RRP of $299, making it the cheapest home console on the market.

The standard Xbox 360 package (with a 60GB HDD, LIVE-ready) will sell for a RRP of $399 (a savings of $100 off the previous RRP), while the Xbox 360 Elite has also had $100 knocked off its RRP, coming in at the new holiday price of $549.

Pretty big price-drops, especially ahead of the new free dashboard update New Xbox Experience that is set to change the entire interface and community aspect of the Xbox 360.

If you didn't own one before, it could be time to finally cave in.

seems to be some speculation that the 360 is nearing the end of its peak cycle and the PS3 is now set to take over as that's where the true processing power is that hasn't been tapped into yet .... Just a thought if ur considering buying a console

Here's a thought - there are stacks of awesome games only on consoles. Every house has room for a PC and a console IMO

Tap into all that power to make a shitty platformer that will transform gaming as you know it!

The only people who would be speculating would be PS3 owners. Surely paying twice as much for a console means it's twice as good?

I have a PS3 and even I reckon it will be ages before the PS3 takes over... if ever. MGS4 was the only game worth getting on ps3 or xbox. All three consoles are absolutely terrible. I always come crawling back to my old besty mate with the mouse and keyboard.

PS3 isn't getting ready to do anything. As an example, I've bought 4 new games for my 360 over the past month or so with all the new shit coming out. I haven't bought a game for my PS3 since MGS4 came out, and probably wont buy another game for it until Final Fantasy comes out.

I keep hearing people talking about all this untapped power the PS3 has. Well, its untapped for a reason, cos its a fucking dog to write anything for. You'd think Sony may have learned something from the PS2, but no, apparently not.

On topic though, my lead at work just bought a 360 a week ago, so I'm finding it hilarious that the price drops now :P

Who cares how much power the console has if nobody can harness it.

Games in the stores is the measure, and the 360 wins.

wasn't the ps2 highly successful, with shitloads of titles? or was that the original playstation

I've had a PS3 for months and bought my first game for it (Little Big Planet) on the weekend.

The PS3's "power" is like a tree falling in a forest with noone to hear it.

The reality is the best 360 and best PS3 games do not show one console to be better visually than the other. If you can only have one for gaming, 360 arguably has the better exclusives.

Heres a thought... consoles are shit.

Here's a thought... A platform is as shit as its games selection, and considering every platform has games worth playing, there's merit to owning any one of them.

I've managed to avoid my various consoles and PC from attacking each other while they sleep, so I'll just go on enjoying all of the games that fanboys are missing out on.

Well, I guess thats why they figured no changes were necessary. I guess the difference was, back in the days of PS2 and PS1 what alternative did you have? If you wanted to make money you had to release your game on Playstation or PS2 because it was just so ridiculously dominant. They were still absolute dogs to code for though, and nothing has changed on that front with the PS3, the only difference is now people can release a game on the Wii or the 360 and still be successful so theres no need to put up with the torture of coding for a Sony console.

Not yet, the thing will probably cost you about $300 though. For all the Fanbois saying the PS3 is expensive: Exactly how much will it cost you to upgrade your HDD when it is full of game installs and DLC? Cost me $90 for a 250gb HDD and 2 mins to install without voiding warranty. ;D

TBH, it's looking more and more like blu-ray for the 360 won't happen ever. Especially now with the big netflix deal MS have in the US.

Both consoles have extorting peripheral prices $100 for a Dual Shock contrller, another $10 for a USB cable. Heck $50 for the blu-ray remote. The HDD expansion is the only example I can think of where the PS3 is a better deal and I agree that it's awesome, but you're kidding youtself if you think it comes close to closing that $300 price difference between the two machines.

Only suckers pay

I see what you're saying. Only the PS3 supports so many 3rd party devices that both competitive pricing and features are far superior to what is on offer for the 360. Simply the support for keyboard and mouse is something to be applauded. You also don't have to fork out a stupid amount of cash for a wireless internet dongle and a subscription to play online and browse the shop.

I bought an Xbox 360 first, I've had it for about a year, great machine. I've had my PS3 for roughly 4 months and I find it to be way more flexible than the 360 in regards to the things it can do other than playing games. I'm going to sell my 360 games and buy the ones I like for my PS3, only because I use my PS3 A LOT more. I use it way more as a media centre extender and found it a lot easier to setup than my 360 which I never ended up getting to work.

Anyhow, my point is this, while on the surface it seems like the 360 is a superior purchase (especially with the big price difference) you may want to look in to exactly the features you wish to utilise. If all you want to do is play games, and nothing else, the 360 is probably the best choice at the moment. If you're looking for a console that is closer to a PC than a Megadrive than go with the PS3.

Guess you have to look for OTHER things to do on a console when that console has no games rite? :) :) :) :) ^__________^

For me different games suit different platforms.

FPS = PC always

Sports games = xbox360 + Big LCD TV

Playing fifa or nhl or nba would lick balls on my PC, where FPS using the analog controller would lick balls IMO.

I got an xbox elite last week for 250 euros. So far have picked up gta4 and gears of war 2 for it, think I prefer GTA4 as its more my kind of game. Really liked a few of the demo's too, Ace Combat 6, devil may cry 4 and strangely enough an fps Bioshock. My laptop isnt the best to play the latest and greatest and dont think ill be buying a gaming PC again.

Why? Theres no reason to use it, nothing needs it. So you plug a keyboard into your PS3 and go "Yay, I have a keyboard plugged into my PS3" and then look at it?

I don't know why you'd want to sell your 360 games and re-buy them on PS3. More often than not when it comes to cross platform titles, the PS3 version is the one that is lacking in some way (no DLC, buggy, features missing, runs worse, etc). Now that Rock Band is out here, I actually sold my PS3 version and bought it on 360 for that version reason, the 360 version is just better, has more features and more support.

I don't mind my PS3, the few exclusive games I have played on it have been pretty good, and its handy having a blu-ray player now, but to even pretend its somehow head and shoulders above the 360 is just ludicrous.

Just get whatever one suits you best. Fighting between consoles is like two fags having a fight to see who is more homo.
I got a PS3 because MGS is the best thing since sliced bread. MGS4 was a 10/10 game for me it took a large dump on any other SP game since the original.

This is the only part of your post that I really agree with. I recommended by step-dad pick up a PS3 despite the price disparity, solely because he's looking for a media player first and a game machine second.

The PS3 has been awesome for him for blu-ray movies and the occasional casual game like Buzz. The simple user interface also means he's been able to stream music from his PC and plug in a digital camera to slide-show photos on his projector screen etc - it was definitely the right choice.

Anyone on looking for games first though, or just on a tighter budget I'd definitely put 360 first.

um, you can do all that on the 360 dan... even play xvid/divx.
Dan
Posted 03:55pm 13/11/08
Scorp. Blu-ray was the primary motivator, but the PS3 UI imo is more intuitive for someone less familiar with consoles.

NXE should be pretty good, but I really don't like the 360 as a media player. For example the "media center extender" stuff is completely worthless - why does it need more than one method of playing media, it just complicates things.
