A new version of Ubuntu Linux has been released, bringing what is probably the most popular Linux distribution for desktops up to version 8.10:
Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop Edition is designed for the pervasively connected digital lifestyle. With new 3G network support, users can move smoothly from wired and WiFi networks onto 3G cellphone networks while traveling. Ubuntu 8.10 is also built to be shared - users can start a quick "guest session" on the fly and let someone use their computer to surf the web or check email, while maintaining the security and integrity of their own data. And if that person really enjoys their brief session as an Ubuntu guest, they can put Ubuntu on any USB key and take it home to install on their own computer rather than having to burn a CD.
Check your favourite local mirrors for the ISOs and jump into it or head over to the official site for more information and more download links. If you haven't tried Linux on the desktop, now's a good time to give it a crack.

A new version of Ubuntu Linux has been released, bringing what is probably the most popular Linux distribution for desktops up to version 8.04:

Ubuntu is probably my favourite distro for desktops but it still fails when doing work things like connecting to Exchange, setting up printers, etc :(

I love ubuntu on my media box. I just wanted it on my laptop also to run a mythtv frontend on. I know the problems are probably always going to be with the hardware manufacturer's, it just sucks.

8.10 should have a few wifi fixes (the .24 kernel had some bugs).

i might do the upgrade and try it out. i hope they've done some work to the network manager tool, as it was hopeless.

I thought that this version was specifically looking to improve it's WiFi compatibility?

Having said that, my wireless has always worked immediately. So ner.

My laptop's WiFi worked for WPA2 out of the box since 7.04 by just clicking the network icon.

Some USB adapters I've tried weren't so lucky.

Pleasant supprise, after doing some proprietry driver updates through the ubuntu tool I am writing this using wifi through my laptop. I'll just make sure the connection doesn't die after a minute like I have seen it do on previous installs.

Loaded this up last night on a thumb stick. Massive fan of the overall vibe and experience ubuntu gives off. Not sure I could ever switch to it full time though.

I'm weaning myself off XP and onto Ubuntu on my laptop since it's pretty much 100% compatible. Not so much luck on my desktop, where the wifi adapter drivers don't really seem to work.

Just thought I'd say that despite an hour or so of fucking around, I still couldn't get my girlfriend's wireless to work. It would detect all of the nearby networks, but wouldn't connect. Woo, go Ubuntu.

Yeh wifi still seems to be the biggest complaint for Ubuntu :| 8.04 worked immediately out of the box with my Dell M1210; haven't upgraded to 8.10 yet (too scared it'll toast my laptop while I'm still OS)

Yeah, same here. I hadn't encountered a problem with it until recently. My girlfriend's PC keeps fucking up with both Vista and XP, and she continually needs to format. It's apparently some incredibly unlucky combination of hardware or something. She decided to install Ubuntu, but neither 8.04 or 8.10 have worked with her wireless card. It's so fucking frustrating.

7.10 and 8.04 wifi worked with my XPS M1530 straight away - though 8.04 fucked up the touchpad terribly, fingers crossed on it working again with 8.10!

No ausgamers mirror this time?

Nah, I figured its scattered pretty well everywhere and its dead easy to find thanks to Ubuntu's awesome mirroring setup plus well-seeded torrents. Most Aussie ISPs have local mirrors these days don't they?

I've seen this before: for some reason some WiFi cards are supported perfectly with no encryption or WEP, but on those cards WPA wont work.

I've tried ubuntu a number of times, but have always failed to get dual monitors working and can't get used to the way fonts are rendered, I think they're rendered mac style?

I invariably try some or other update recommended on the forums and the whole thing blows up and I just throw it all in the too hard basket and drag my sorry ass back to xp. :(

It wouldn't work on unencrypted or WEP either.

Yeah, getting dual monitors working was always a pain, but this is the first time I've used it and had zero issues. It all works perfectly for me straight through the GUI. I think they've actually done away entirely with the xorg.conf file.

I do like the way the fonts are rendered though.

Yeah I got it from THE NODE in the end (linked to from the Ubuntu site), but no where near as fast as from ausgamers... :(

Does Optus even have a file mirroring service a la GA, Internode etc.?

Dual monitors if you have NVIDIA is relatively easy if you install the 'nvidia-settings' application.

yeah I can't d/l from anywhere as fast as I can ausgamers... only 4megabytes/sec from internode. can get ~9meg/sec from ausgamers. <3 ausgamers. out of interest, where are ausgamers' servers, physically?

Even that app had it's issues, because it was still just editing the xorg.conf file. Have you tried 8.10? The built in screen setup wizard seems to actually work every time.

I just updated today actually. Are you referring to the "System -> Preferences -> Screen Resolution" program or something else? After the update I tried

1. Delete xorg.conf
2. Restart
3. Start that program

but it could not see my second monitor, at which point I gave up and used nvidia-settings again.

Well I knew that much. I also know I have a 1ms ping response from syd5 from my workstation so they sure must be 'close'. I'm just curious...

Yep, that's what I was talking about, though I didn't upgrade, I did a fresh install. I've always had trouble with getting dual monitors going on a fresh Ubuntu installation, but as I said, this time it was done with a few clicks of the mouse. Maybe upgrading did something strange?

You sure is 4 and 9 megabytes per second (as in 40 megabits/90 megabits)? I don't even get 9MB/sec on my home LAN.

Your home LAN must be awful then, because I easily get 55MB/s across my home Gigabit.

You get 9MB/s from Ausgamers? So you're on a 72Mbit internet connection?

Is there an easy way to get this onto a USB stick without actually having it installed to begin with? I found a guide but it involves running random batch files and random exe's. When's nero gonna get "burn to usb device" options.

Why not just make a bootable USB stick off the live cd?
