Nintendo Co Ltd (Nintendo of Japan), have revealed an updated version of the DS, simply called Nintendo DSi. The new system still features a touch screen and regular screen (both larger than the original DS screens, though), as well as a 0.3 megapixel camera. It also features a built-in web browser where you'll equally be able to visit a DSi Store to purchase DSiWare titles as they slowly roll out from the system's Japanese release date of November 1.

According to Nintendo, the DSi features much improved sound, the ability to adjust pitch and playback and can also take SD Memory Cards.

Currently there's no word on when (or if) the system will hit outside of Japan, but it seems likely
we'll see this sometime in 2009. Hit this link for a video of the new Nintendo DSi running, or here for images.

UPDATE: Nintendo of Europe have confirmed the DSi will be hitting the region in 2009 around March. We've contacted Nintendo of Australia with no response yet, but an educated guess would put the machine on our shores during the Easter holiday, 2009.

Nintendo have been just as bad as Sony with handhelds of late. I'd much rather they announce a true nextgen successor to the DS and PSP rather than these rehashed models.

I've read a whole lot of mixed reports about the camera. Half of the sites are saying that the external camera is 3 megapixel, and the inner one is 0.3 megapixel, and the other half are saying that it's got two 0.3 megapixel cameras. The latter doesn't make much sense to me, 0.3 megapixel seems retarded, so I hope it's a mistake.

fyi, the reports that it has 2 touchscreens is wrong, only one is touchscreen, but they are both bigger.

Something like this I'd imagine:

Trade in your DS Lite and 7 games to receive $50 off the price of the DSi!

Anyone who does those trade-ins are fucking idiots.

My girlfriend was telling me that they get in serious trouble if they try to tell a customer not to bother with the trade-in and just buy it.

Nailbomb, making a new portable for Nintendo right now would be one of the stupidest things they could do. The DS basically prints money and isn't showing signs of slowing down for anytime in the future, especially with new features like these.

It does make more sense for Sony to need something before Nintendo though.

Why, it only has an 0.3mpx screen or somewhere thereabouts anyway, so what's the point in higher since it's obviously designed for device-to-device interaction.

i cant see myself upgading from my DS lite, i don't really care about any of those features (the web browser would be nice, but i would rather put the money towards an iphone or something if i really wanted to use the net on the go)

edit: and thats assuming its actually better than the shitty opera ds browser

new portable hardware for nintendo has aaaalways been a slow burn.

gameboy -> gameboy colour -> gameboy sp -> nintendo ds -> ds lite -> dsi. every system is always backwards compatible. so your either on the nintendo portable train or not.

You missed the Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Advance and Gameboy Micro. Slow burn indeed.

The article doesn't mention the fact that the newer model lacks the Gameboy Advance game slot. So its no longer backwards compatible with GBA games...

There was a Gameboy Light too.

Kinda lame imo, GBA slot is handy.

Yeah, that's odd. Doesn't the Guitar Hero game on DS use that slot?
