d[o_0]b points out that the recent v2.40 update might be responsible for some consoles getting toasted. The update has been pulled and the official firmware update FAQ page has been updated with the following:
We are aware of a limited number of consumers experiencing an issue with installing firmware 2.40 on PLAYSTATION 3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to enabling the community and XMB access features delivered in the 2.40 update. In order to further assess the issue, we have temporarily taken the firmware offline for further testing. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up. The Knowledge Center will be updated with information as it becomes available; please check back here for further details.
Stay tuned.

But guys, you can't go posting this, don't you know Ausgamers already have a reputation of being anti-PS3 to dispel?

(Seriously, thread of the year that one, how the hell did that get closed before I got to add my 2c?)

It's because everyone has accepted the fact that the Xbox360 is a s***** bit of hardware so it's refreshing to see another console stuff up for a change.

Ps3 firmware annoys me, last time I updated my firmware it made the background in my dash some horrible light green colour. Really, why was that necessary?

Can't help but notice the lack of Wii bashing.

Just as well I never play any games on my PS3, otherwise I might have turned the thing on and updated!

Not just that, but they're usually about 120MB in size, compared to the ~10MB 360 dashboard updates.

Can't help but notice the lack of Wii bashing.

That's because people have moved on from the Wii to platforms that can maintain long-term interest.

^^ My Wii has by far gotten more attention than any other game platform in my house over the past few weeks (with the exception of some TF2 action). I don't know why, but after I imported Smash Brothers Brawl, I went back and started to play games that I ignored.

Least its not red lights or faulty power cords.

I think there was one couple in the US that were suing M$ for burning down their flat as well cause of a faulty power cord. But I can't remember which one that was, date, which state, etc.
