In case you missed it, Activision have sent through a reminder the console version of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is available today for both PS3 and the Xbox 360 Australia-wide.
"Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars raises the bar for next-gen console games with its variety and intense combat," said Kevin Cloud, Executive Producer, id Software. Whether youre playing online with fifteen friends, or playing a single-player campaign against amazing AI, Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars delivers a new level of team play and combat strategy to the PS3 and 360.
With the PC version of the game having been out since last year (which we scored 9/10), it will be interesting to see how many console players jump on board to see what all the fuss is about. What do you think? Is the home console a viable platform for team-based FPS's in general?

not so much hype for this, considering its been on pc for ages, and no ones playing it right?

they should have released it on console first.

I watched a video review for this. They said that the console version is awful, and considering how lame the PC version is, that's saying something.

The PC game is awesome; I just think its too complicated to translate well to a console experience. It's obviously also too complicated for most PC gamers who would prefer to play newb games like TF2.

I have a copy of this game for PC. Thought it was going to be a BF replacement. No dice. its like BF set in the quake universe minus all the cool stuff with fast strafey quake shooting. No squads, no buddy lists, and the vehicle play just feels wrong. Nice GFX tho. smooth engine. Any one want to buy my copy cheap?

no squads? they're called fireteams. And the vehicles aren't overly powerful in the game unlike BF as they are meant to complement the infantry combat, not make it pointless like it is in BF where the only point of infantry is to have foot races to the vehicle queues.

Wolf ET was rad, shame they couldn't pull this off.

F*****g bang. Spot on.

The end of season 1 on GameArena was a pretty good success. Using one of the other Op's TV server we managed to stream the feed to around 40 people. Thats not a bad number of people watching a season 1 GF.

I never played the POS called BF (wait..i played the bf1942 demo ..twice) so I can't compare this game to that but ETQW offers enough gameplay elements to continuously keep me coming back.

Uh, they did pull it off. It's not a free game like ET so obviously it's not going to gain as much traction. It had a lot of stiff competition that was more attractive to people that want to play online FPS games so it's not as popular as it probably could have been, but that in no way makes it any less of a game.

You should check the feature list some time, especially after the last patch. It is pretty damn awesome, not just technically but also all the stuff that is crammed in it.

I didn't find anything about it complicated, I just found it incredibly boring. I couldn't give a s*** about how 'complicated' a game is, I just want it to be fun.

Well they really didn't pull it off, and i'm not just talking about the dev team that made the game, i'm also talking about the marketing team, pr people and everyone else involved in the success of the game.

To pull off a multiplayer game like this you need to have a LOT of players. And no matter how great the game is, features and all, they didn't pull it off.

I was super excited about this game and thought it was going to be all that BF wasn't. Fail. Over it before the beta ended.

Lots of things annoyed me about this game like the s***** hitbox registration and the weird joltyness.

Oh yeah and TF2 came out at basically the same time so I didn't bother getting my preorder from the eb.

I always find it funny when people talk about "hit registration" without any evidence to back it up. Not saying you're wrong about this particular instance, but I've seen far too many CS players blame "hit rego" for their inability to do anything useful to believe it as a real thing.

I've only played the beta but I found it awesome because it was exactly what BF wasn't - more focus on infantry, less focus on getting shot by teammates for vehicles.

The big problem with ETQW was definitely the fact that it came out the same time as TF2, which is just heaps more attractive to more people.

You need to have enough people to reach a sustainable critical mass. According to the stats site they have ~300,000 players all up with ~10,000/day. Looking at GA stats there's enough people playing to keep it sustainable.

The real issue for the PC version (IMO) is whether that number of people is enough to attract a sufficient mod community. A couple of decent mods could completely turn it around.

I never played the full version but in the beta if you were 1 on 1 with a player he would have a really jerky animation and you would be deadset shooting on him but nothing would happen. Dunno if it was a netcode issue or hitboxes.

I don't really want to get in to a debate about this game, just know I dislike it and am kinda sad about it because Stopwatch game types are pretty much the best competition mode ever created.

If you trawl the official ETQW forums much you'll see a lot of complaints about jerky animations (It was noted by Carmack himself in fact - 10hz animations in a 30hz game or something) and people having issues with either the netcode or hitboxes.

I'm not even holding out much hope for RTCW2 either since it'll be on a similar engine :(

I never noticed the jerky animation thing in the beta. Weird, seems like that should have been something that was conquered back in Quake 2 days when they built in interpolation into animations.

Re: the hitbox issue - does anyone have any ACTUAL evidence? And by evidence I mean where they go in and make a movie testing it under controlled circumstances. I've seen a few of these videos for CS (and I think CoD2?) that show pretty clearly that there are hitbox shenanigans, but I've certainly heard more claims about it in various games than I've seen proof of it happening. Seems like something that should be relatively easy to prove?

I guess for some people it doesn't matter whether it's true or not. I can't back this up with evidence but to me this game and the engine (Q4 felt the same) just doesn't 'feel' right at all. ETQW to me feels very similar to BF2/2141 in the movement and shooting areas (waist deep in mud and shooting a potato gun). I think it's especially noticeable after all the Q3 engine based games I still play currently.

Fair enough; I know that the engine feel is a big deal so totally get it. I think though that saying hit rego etc is busted is an accusation that should only be made with some pretty serious evidence, because its so strongly indicative of serious problems in the game engine. It the game just sucks to play because of the feel that's fair enough (I've def. played a lot of FPS games like that).

I would agree that the betas had issue's I bloody hated beta 1 and all these above mentioned issue's were apparent.

To totally rag on a game without even having played the full version is extremely poor form I have played 355 hours and it just keeps getting better and deeper.

I bought this yesterday for PS3 ...and I have owned the PC version since its release

I have found it to work just as well as the PC version, asides from a mouse not being available (and I will be using one as the PS3 supports this and a KB too but not sure if the game does) its fantastic ... I am loving using the PS3 Controller to play the game and being able to kick back in my lounge room and play ETQW.

Thus far I am really pleased with the game , its performance (graphically it looks great) and everything else seems the same as the PC version . I wont be returning this game its part of the collection now and I knew this within the first 20 mins of owning the game.

So coming form someone who owns it on the PS3 and if you own one and want to play ...I strongly recommend the purchase...

I assume this is a stupid question - but PS3 and Xbox owners can't play against each other right?

:( that'd be awesome, but I guess MS and Sony'd not want that to happen in case one console proved far superior than the other

I still think they should pit PC versions against the console versions so that all the console noobs can be proven wrong once and for all about how their controller is on par with kb+mouse.
Midda
Posted 06:28pm 05/6/08
^^ I really don't think console players believe that a gamepad is better than KB/mouse, I think it's more that they're not really that bothered by it.
