I've been lucky enough to have a friend of a friend who had a private beta account, and from what I've seen your decisions and actions really affect the gameplay. Although I've only seen screenshots and heard rant after rant of how good the private beta is, it has definately caught my attention.

The open beta begins on the Monday 31st, but the client has been available for open beta testers to download since Saturday.
Face of Mankind is an MMORPG set in the 24th century. You are invited to play out the ageless battle of good vs. evil, and witness all shades of gray in between. Role-playing and your real-life skills are the raw ingredients of game play.
Website: http://www.fomportal.com/ (Apply for an open beta account).

A snippet of the story,
By the end of the 22nd century, the overcrowding of Earth’s cities, the growing drain on natural resources, and the memories of recent violence caused mankind to desire new and remote locations to start their lives over again. The International Space Administration’s colonization efforts provided the perfect solution – distant havens for hundreds of thousands of Earth’s citizens to take up residence. However, as colonization efforts spread and the Vortex-Net brought humanity to the stars in ever-greater numbers, mankind’s footprint became more noticeable on a galactic scale. By the mid-24th century Earth’s spreading population had become obvious, attracting the attention of a very hostile and aggressive alien race.

Ok well look at it this way...

It may not have the cutting edge graphics. But some of us once played TEXT BASED RPGs that had NO GRAPHICS!. Just colored text and that was all.

Now also to top this off the text based RPGs used to use a telnet client and all the software was server based there was no 'graphical client' which therefore made it a hell of a lot harder to cheat on.

Although you could use scripts to script inside the realm and enter commands it was still a hell of a lot harder to cheat.

In fact the only cheating on the text based RPGs was where clients would get ghosted and people would hoard items because some items were limited in number.

But in the end you have to look at it and say that we have come a hell of a long way since the days of text and entering commands into a telnet client

Oh and we didn't call it "MMORPGs" either.

It had a better name. It was called MUD or rather Multi User Dungeon.

While the mainstream gamers might prefer WoW, this game will attract a different kind of MMO player. You can't compare WoW to this game, it's completely different. I played a very similar game to FoM, it was called Neocron. That was by far the best time I've had in any game. Yes it had issues, but that FPS style added a totally new element to the game. Coming from FPS's, Neocron was perfect for me. In SWG and WoW, I can't/couldn't get used to the fighting system.

If you're an FPS fan and want to make a jump to MMOs, then Face of Mankind should be on the top of your list.

That last bit was meant to say "This is not a WoW bashing post, I'm simply saying WoW doesn't suit certain types of gamers"

@z0r - I always post from the homepage. Whenever I try to post from the forums, it says I must login, then when I try logging in, it says my password is wrong. I don't post enough to waste time fixing it.
