I think the fact that 20, 000+ people playing final fantasy xi in Japan alone right now gives ps2 online a pretty go chance of succeeding. As for the server issue I think it's better that games have separate servers it means that if a server goes down it only effects people wanting to play that game, where as with Crap-Box live if a server goes down heaps of games are effected.

Good games for online play.
Hardware online arena - pretty kick ass game, pretty much interstate76 but tanks and jeeps with downloadable content aka maps, vehicles etc.
Final fantasy xi - the best rpg makers bring you the best MMORPG.
Gran Turismo 4 - the definitive racing game
Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain - classic
Medal of Honor: Rising Sun - every body love MOH
SSX 3 - wicked snow boarding game
SOCOM - you may say it's old but it's still good (CS is hell old) and there’s a new SOCOM coming
Tony Hawk 4 and THUG - ahhh it’s just plain good take my word for it
Tribes: Aerial Assault - classic
Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior - haven't played it but have heard great things
XIII - a game with a heap of style

Other not so great gamers
Destruction Derby: Arenas
Amplitude
EverQuest Online Adventures
FIFA Football 2004
Midnight Club II
My Street
Need For Speed: Underground
RISK: Global Domination
Sims: Bustin' Out, The
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm
Twisted Metal: Black Online

when i said "Other not so great games" i never said they were bad , i just don't think there as good as the other ones i listed, but your right i don't like sports games, and NFS:U probaly will be a good game, my point was that there are heaps of great online games already.

also PS2 has central station that holds all the player handles(nicknames) and stats
