Eurogamer reports that Twitter sleuth, Superannuation, has done some digging and may have found evidence of a Dante's Inferno sequel.

According to the report, Joshua Rubin, who co-wrote Assassin's Creed 2, has listed a "major unannounced sequel from Visceral Studios at EA Games" as one of his current projects on his resume, which he then ties, unceremoniously, to a Dante's Inferno trailer, allowing us to pretty much put two and two together.

The first Dante's Inferno was essentially a God of War clone in the gameplay department, but had a solid idea with some great scripting and voice-acting, it just peaked, in my opinion, too early.

If a sequel is actually in the works, would you be happy for the same gameplay foundation, or would you prefer to see something new?

We know some of you have already had a crack at this, but for anyone else who hasn't yet, we have an in-depth review for you to check out, with all the gnarly bits of info about one of the most mature and visually disturbing games we've seen in a long time.

It's true, Visceral Games pretty much took the gameplay blueprint from the God of War guys, but their sheen is slightly more interesting, and the Dante character a lot more engaging than the super pissed off God of War, Kratos.

No, there's not some secret football mode to unlock in Dante's Inferno, EA have just released a trailer that will presumably be aired as a 30 second commercial spot during this weekend's Superbowl XLIV, the massively popular NFL premiership game that always sees advertisers pulling out their best efforts.

Of course, there's no actual gameplay, just a cinematic but still cool. While not necessarily a bad thing, I can't help but think of Arrested Development's Steve Holt when Dante is screaming "Beatrice!". Watch it right here on AusGamers.

Dante's Inferno hit Australian shelves today (two days before Europe and a week before the US) for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Stay tuned for AusGamers review, coming very shortly.

EA continue their developer diary series promoting Dante's Inferno with an overview of "Fraud", the eighth scenario in the nine circles of hell that players will be battling through in a few weeks to save their beloved Beatrice.

In case you missed them, you can still find the dev diaries for the previous seven circles in the AusGamers video library. Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, Heresy and Violence. Next stop "Treachery" and Lucifer himself, woo woo.

Watch the "Fraud" dev diary trailer right here on AusGamers.

Dante's Inferno is due on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on February 4th 2010 with PSP following on February 25.
