Can you download the entire contents of wikipedia? Does anyone know?

I mean sure, you could web spider the lot of it, but i mean do they allow a single .zip download or whatever to keep a copy of it locally?

Wikipedia spouts on about being a free encyclopaedia but that means little when your offline.

As teq points out, yes. You can also keep track of their dump progress on this page: http://dumps.wikimedia.org/backup-index.html

Wikipedia is awesome. Go give Jimmy Wales some money, yo!

a way better option is downloading your facebook.

i did that the other day and it was great!

everything on your wall since day one, all your photos and stuff, all neatly pacakged up.

been meaning to write some perl scripts to crawl over it and pick out all the cool stuff ive done with my fb over the years (ie all the yuotubes)

apparently if you click the first link in the main text of all wiki articles, and keep clicking the first link through all the redirected articles you always end up at philosophy.

theres a bit of trivia for ya!

31Gb uncompressed? That can't be right, Wikipedia has everything every written about everything in history.. surely it'd be more than 31Gb.

A gigabyte is a fuckload though. Try writing a gigabyte of meaningful HTML right now.

Also wikipedia doesn't have everything. They quite deliberately don't want everything.

Wikipedia is useless without it's sources. The good information is in it's sources, the articles themselves are subject to bias, etc.

So on this topic in case anyone stumbles across it, I was actually looking at this a couple days ago because I was trying to find a set of data that I could use as dummy data to import into WordPress. If anyone sees something like this that would be awesome. Or if you're hacking away on WP data and could turn some of it into an RSS feed to be imported that would similarly be rad.

I must be doing it wrong. I navigated through a random article and then got stuck in a loop between language, communication, and mathematics.

While its not possible it would be interesting to have say a bit-torrent style approach to serving up Wikipedia

I got in a loop as well, indo-european languages > language family > language > communication > information > order theory > mathematics > greek language > indo-european languages

seems like those are all pages you'd be likely to hit playing this game, and you'd get in the same loop

Why wouldn't it be possible?

There are several p2p content publishing platforms, although the focus is primarily on anonymity and privacy. Freenet is one example.
