WEB DESIGN : those studying or in the industry.

I am looking to set up a business on the internet. I have everything ready to go as far as layout and function goes.

It will need a search engine based 'back end.' Much like the sites you go to when you are looking for holiday accommodation, seek etc etc.
EG: You can type in various categories depending on what you want to search by.

SEEK:
industry->sub category.
pay range.
location.

HOLIDAY TYPE SITE:
a)Location
b)how many stars
c)price

It needs to have payment options for advertising and also paying users.
Hopefully i want paying customers and advertisers able to modify their own stuff if required.

Hopefully im painting a picture here.

I am not just fishing. Everything is ready to go to talk to a designer regarding workability and quoting. I am looking at a good price as well as a person who knows their stuff. So it may be a good 'on-the-side' project for someone who may work for a company and do it in their spare time or someone studying looking for some self promotion and perhaps a bit of $$ on the side.

Please PM me email address for further conversation. (ill try to remember to check it but let me know if you send through one)

Any general questions can be lobbed on here but I am keeping most details of the business details confidential.

Cheers.

Yeah I've made many sites like that, but I cbf. If you run out of options on here I can suggest a web business that can quote you on it, probably at least 3-5 grand though, and they'll want to host it so they can bend you over once a month.

yer i have heard a few prices around that already.

i am looking for someone who does it a little ... lets say cheaper. hence the recreational designer or someone who may have other motives in the way of free advertising or self promotion or even an investment of time into a small share of the business as a hypothetical.

as far as hosting i'm not too fussed initially.

everything will be legit and above board unless someone wants to do it for coke and hookers it could be arranged.

Is the data that you are searching your own supplied data? Or is it data that is expected to be collected? E.g., scraped from the web from multiple sites.

If it's your data, what format is it in currently (e.g., Excel spreadsheet)?

I don't want to do it - just clarifying points for yourself and also anyone on here that might want to.

it will be data entry stuff.

probably spreadsheet xl.

it will be drawing on a database not other peoples websites.

there may be an aspect of drawing data from the interwebs but the idea is to have the info internal.

yer yer i know i know hogman.

basically i need a startup -

something to take to a backer to fund the project properly.

basically getting something done on the cheap will give a basis to work for those visual people.

the idea has a lot of potential and i know a lot about what it is i want to do. except the web building stuff.
just having the resources to do so is the hurdle at the moment.

hence the backer....i do know a couple of people who will be likely to want to go in who have some dollars behind them.

i just want something to start with rather than the idea and a plan.

Surely you could build a vaguelly respectable / functional demo with some time + OSS shit like Joomla and stuff?

for someone who uses a computer for work and games only, web based programs like the one you suggest (havent looked at it yet) are quite helpful.

Can argue all day about CMS systems but I'll throw in Drupal - just because it has a very strong community with a lot of the addons required to develop what you need. Not as easy to implement as Joomla, but mostly a lot more flexible before you get into programming anything yourself.

A good business plan and forecast should net you investment, a el-cheapo version of what the site could be certainly won't.

I run a 30+ staff digital agency, we get 10 leads like your request every day, the best are people wanting to do the new facebook for a fiver.

If you pursue the el-cheapo route, then a uni grad or low-cost freelancer is your best bet, I'd recommend bespoke PHP or Wordpress/Drupal over Joomla.

This is standard in the industry and is how many small development firms make their money, by charing a hosting and support fee each month for their clients. It costs money to pay knowledgable staff to pick the phones and help the customers on the other end...

I've spent the last 1.5 years doing what your asking, and this is replacing the previous software (that didn't work) that was worth over $100,000 dollars.

your project may only be a $3-$5 grand outlay for a PROGRAMMER, someone who can do all the actual work off their own back. so unless you're offering some serious re-enumeration if the startup takes off (part ownership or something) but you're dramatically underestimating how much effort it really takes to capitalize on something like this.

slide shows / photoshop is all you need. we never demo at pitches, too much can go wrong.

well as it seems this thread got bumped from the deep dead past.

UPDATE:

register company name and web address tomorrow.

it is now going to be just a basic website which I can do (the business partner will do though)

the working part of it i can do at my current job. with a small percentage of profits going to the current company i work with as a compensation for my time which i am already being paid.

best result really.

dollars are already dribbling in and this is all without advertising or websites.
this is gonna be fun and finally get me out of the salary trap.

will give more details once everything is finalised.

^ ill let you know after we register it....

last thing i want is some bloke who wants to be a prick and register it so it costs us more to 'negotiate' a sale to get the name.

thanks andrew.

i appreciate your pm earlier and the feedback and offering to 'go along for the ride' type scenario.

its gong to be a simple setup initially on the web side of things.
im already busy as utilising the structure already established with the business i work in.

also we changed tack on the direction we wanted to go.
to do the work ourselves instead of user does all the work and we take a small amount.

now its me who does the work and charge heaps more.

eventually that will turn around its just as it grows we may as well be charging well and growing at the same time instead of outlaying heaps and hope things take off.

this is a lot less stressful.

A good place to hire cheap talent who have a proven track record is elance http://www.elance.com - although i would use it only for relatively simple jobs. There are a lot of talented people in countries like india who do work well relatively cheaply for westerners via that site.

As a few people have pointed out though already if you aren't willing to pay real money to people for a more complex job don't expect real work from anyone - i have been in the web industry over 10 years and never needed to work for anyone for free "for my portfolio" or "the experience". People who do so are inexperienced chumps.
