I dunno guys, I just started working for what's effectively a government department, and they're bound by many of the same rules, including a 36 hour week. That means I actually get time to myself in the evenings, it's awesome.
Oh, and it pays 8k more than I was getting in the private sector :p

+1 @ hardware.
it's common knowledge that many (most?) government jobs have < 40 hour weeks with flexible hours.
edit: posts have since been deleted making this post seem quite out of context now :)

A guy I used to work with did this, had to quit because the public sector slackery (which I know doesn't extend to all areas) was driving him to clawing out his eyeballs.
Fun fact, do you know how many teams are employed full time to work on etax? :P

MY wife works in public sector IT. It's a govy job so you know it's near impossible to get fired and you get TOIL for any extra time worked. The managers won't want you to accrue too much TOIL so you won't be working long hours. 36 hour week and probably 12% super = win. And an A07 position by the looks. Just accept the only way to get promoted is to join someones fiefdom and get your nose brown.

signing in also to say how jealous i am of my mates who are going places in the public sector
a08's, a07's, they all work A SHIT LOAD LESS than I do and make comparable money
if i wasnt get a shit load of shares as part of my package, i probably would have given up private sector and jumped ship to government just for the 9 day fortnites, relaxed conditions etc, comparable if not better pay etc

Hell, some a05's in public service do fuck all (and have fuck all skill) but are still kept around.
I unfortunately have to actually do work as opposed to most of my "peers".

Dude the only people who actually do work in the public service, are those people. What they don't know is that their entire jobs are pointless lead to no benefit to the public and will be reshuffled and relabelled under a new name within another 5 years.
Take department of communities for example.
Basically they decided to lump sports in with all kinds of related departments, like child protective services (where sexually assaulted kids are taken into care). You can easily see the synergies! And the multi million dollar merges are totally worthwhile when they take 3-5 years. (just in time for someone else to get the budget for it and decide to split them apart again)

I work for communities IT and yes the mergers have kept many people busy since the last election. Sport was such a small dept and their Infrastructure so basic so I don't see the issue with integrating them. It will be interesting to see what happens next election as there are rumor of health being split up but I dunno how they would like to tackle that mess.

^^ of course, merging housing into it makes so much sense too...
They split dept of families into communities & child safety so many years ago... then the pull this mega merger.
Hey Linker, I didn't know someone else here works for communities too. I work there too under the IS&R branch.

Lol anyone that has worked gov would know there are a lot of places they could save money .. I mean get rid of half the middle management that's not needed would start. In saying that I work for what "was" a government department as a AO6 (who gets paid overtime) and I have almost tripled my wage from private sector due to single no kids and being happy to do stupid hours for decent money at this stage in my life.
Work life balance for us really means ... flexible hours if needed (eg we have a few that go at 3 and pick up their kids from school etc then come back and finish work or start early those days, in saying that we are IT and don't need to be on site all the time) and not such demanding hours as private sector.
After all ... private sector have to make money :P

Definitely know what you mean. The amount spent on printers alone boggles my mind and the fact that all records can only be kept on paper.
Fish, I work in Infrastructure team. When sport moved in most of their IT staff left. I think there are only a couple left.

You sure you make AO7/AO8 money spookies? The job above is AO7 for reference. AO8 is 97k-103k. Oh and it's all going up by 4% in a few months. last edited by hardware at 13:49:35 13/Mar/11

Being a public servant, I can vouch for the perks of the job. Flexible working arrangements, job stability and awesome super (I'm scoring 17.5% super at the moment; 5% out of my own pocket, 12.5% from the government).
The level of work is not a piece of cake for everybody though. While there are some people who coast on their ass doing SFA and you get stuck with useless fucks who are too hard to fire, there are people who work their arse off for less pay than they would be getting in the private sector. I work hard and get tasked with completing some fairly high-level projects. I could probably get paid more doing what I do elsewhere, but I love the team & environment I work in, and I enjoy being part of what my work area achieves. I also like doing these harder tasks as they improve my skill set and flesh out my resume.
Another downside to the public sector is how rigid it is; you can't just give somebody a promotion or a pay rise just because they have done incredibly well in their current job. You have to go through open, merit based processes. It's also an incredibly difficult, long-winded process to demote or fire somebody for under-performing. You could go through a 9 month process of performance management, counselling & warnings only to have the whole process canned by an off-the-cuff remark or a mistake on a form.
Definitely know what you mean. The amount spent on printers alone boggles my mind and the fact that all records can only be kept on paper.
The amount spent on printers IS shocking. It's disgusting how many fat, lazy pricks have a little laser or inkjet printer on their desk because they're too lazy to walk 15 metres to a copier. Those little things HAEMORRHAGE money compared to the big units. The paper records thing isn't true though; the overwhelming majority of our record keeping in my team is done electronically.

The only thing about a 4% pay rise each year is that you'll know exactly how much you'll be paid in say 5 years time, and if you don't think that's enough at the end of that period then you'll have to live with knowing that for the next 5 years. I guess it's better than getting no payrise, but it's sometimes it's about the thrill of the chase.

Yeah. When I signed on to the new job I was made aware (and made sure to check/confirm) the whole department is getting payrises of particular percentages in May, October and March '12.
That means that not only am I already on 8k more than my last private sector job, I'll be a shitload up on it in 12mo.
Plus, everything else is more awesome - including not working back til 11.

Yeah, 12.5% employer super is awesome
If you were on 9%, you'd need to make another ~3.5k more to put in super to be even with someone getting 12.5%
And that's providing you can salsac it, otherwise you'd need to make $5k more just to be equal

Heh I'm nearing late twenties and still only have a few grand in my super account. May have stuffed myself on the long term compounding with that one.
So clearly what I need to do is take a phat public service job to make up for it. :P
edit: In fact now that I look at it, my fees/tax/insurance is 2.47 times the actual gains I've made, on a "growth" account, which has basically only been active since the gains after the GFC lows began. FFS, what's the point of super if it does worse than I would. grarghf
