So how many of you are today trying to decide wether or not your should remotely power down servers and your infrastructure. And how many people are not coming into work due to flooding (staffing levels)

MIght be a good idea to take something to management if something not already in place, not that I am a fan of BCP being spearheaded by IT

Why not?
Seeing as I.T is so integrated into the infrastructure of modern businesses (disaster recovery procedures etc), it's the logical place to start.

Or has my sarcasm metre flooded as well?

Yeah see think that while IT is deeply rooted in it, and plan regularly around outages really it should be spread across all business units. And spearheaded by CXO

Also whats the purpose of uptime if there is no staff to man the systems & phones, and at the moment with power outages and a congested phone network remote work could be problematic

Funnily enough, my team leader had a BCP meeting that was cancelled yesterday due to the flooding...

I think a combination of IT & HR would be best for creating a business continuity plan. If you have business types running the show, you wind up with novel chestnuts like having satellite phones in every building...

We have BVP but given the small scale of our business it's like a 4 page document - including one page of logos and title haha

We embarked on a BCP before but it was dumped because the business wanted to duplicate everything and have zero downtime then balked at the stupidly high cost of achieving that goal.

BCP planning should involve a senior IT staff member. It probably shouldn't be left to IT but certainly a senior IT staffer should have sufficient knowledge of the business practices and what is possible with technology.
