The site's been down since late last night and over at Whirlpool people are saying the site was hacked thru the banner ads.

Anyone confirm this? Sucks having one less forum to visit.

I got an email from them saying they thought their servers had been compromised and told me to visit ocau forums & change my password just in case.

edit: that whirlpool thread said a bunch of people got redirected to some site that infects your computer with shit, add that to my other computer weirdness I've been scanning like crazy lately and I find it rather hilarious that a bunch of antivirus/antimalware programs detect "cogslan.dll" from cogs/the arena as a backdoor trojan. I'm pretty sure it's not a trojan because even if I delete cogs & reinstall it it still picks it up unless whoever wrote cogs put a virus in it.

I'm more worried about them getting my email address than my ocau password. I'm definitely ignoring every email I get from this point onwards to that email account since it's probably going to be a virus.

this happened a week ago - google flash banner ad virii are the new black so it's not really too surprising...

that must be an interesting thing to deal with eh. how do you tell the hand that feeds you that you have to pull their ads until they clean up their act?

I'm enjoying reading the whirlpool forums about it all. So many people with an opinion with no clue yet it's not stopping them from sharing it. I do enjoy a chuckle when I see someone say they are safe cause they surf on a Mac.

I just wonder if Agg had an IDS/IPS setup for security. Be nice to look at the event stream for any attacks that hit it. Although with the Gumblar worm, your website would get compromised when your desktop PC goes to the dodgy site and steals FTP credentials. No real breach to the web server, worm owner just logs in as you and uploads new html/php/asp with links to his malware to infect more people. No IDS will see that as suspicious but tripwire and other file system monitoring should see the change.

Good thing about these worm and malware authors. They are terrible at compromising websites, leave so many tracks behind and most of their backdoors stick out like dogs balls. On your desktop they can usually install all their crap pretty quietly and have it hide pretty damned well.

Just don't fucking buy anything from there or you may end up losing $1700

What i dont get is why someone would allow their site to be down for so long? Even if the forums are haxored, fine. Removed ads from the website template anda at least get the website back up. Fuck even a better updated news page then the current 'its down' page would be fine.

yeah i think the obvious point you retards perposly didnt acknowldge is that while these amazinly caring giving people run a 'free' website its obvious they get things in return and benefit it in ways that while it might not have been self motivated at the start, most certainly is now.

It should be noted for the record that the only "kickbacks" we get are things to review,99.999% of which are games . We buy all our own hardware, OS software, etc. Pretty much every cent goes into running and expanding it.

I really don't care if ausgamers went for profit assuming they could keep up their current standards. But the truth is i think they'd feel like the quality would go down if they did go for profit. At least quality to the audience.
