No, thats fine, but http://www.ausgamers.com/forums/general/ is a dumb url.

On what grounds do you make that statement? I can't figure out why a URL would make any difference

what? its just annoying after I went all the trouble of writing the super comprehensive in depth FAQ in the OP that you'd write that and just say "the forums are terrible" like there's some real other major difference between those ones and the QGL ones other than the colours

I realise that's all the rage on the Internet but surely you, as a long-standing QGL member and someone that's been involved in QGL/AG since more or less the beginning, realise what we're trying to do here. Note I'm not PERSONALLY offended because I didn't really design or build the forums, but I just find your attitude bewildering, like you can't understand why we're such fuckwits we'd even bother making the AG forum the way we did

My second point was only about the colour scheme. After re-reading it, i can see how it was a bit misleading. I quite like the general ausgamers.com colour scheme, however, I really dont like the ausgamers forum theme.The colours are fine, but I can't stand the white background. I wasn't trying to say "oh hai its terrible" - I was suggesting that apart from the implementing the QGL theme, perhaps the Ausgamers theme could be improved.

The basic reason is shorter==better in internet land and a sub-domain is the best way to section your major content.

However, you should keep it the way you implemented it now for SEO reasons.

I use firefox with the awesomebar; to get to the AG forums I type 'a f' in the location bar and it's the first hit. The awesomebar is awesome.

I dont bookmark qgl at work, I have ninja skills to "alt+d & type q, press down & enter" all in one quick motion
then sometimes I even throw in a ctrl+t, type 'face' and down+ enter

Well, while we are discussing semantics I have always wondered why you 303 redirect www.ausgamers.com.au to www.ausgamers.com instead of vice-versa.

yeah a URL doesn't worry me in the slightest, I use chrome and when you type in the first few letters of a URL it beings up the one I want anyway.

we're still at the same place which was comindico which became soul which I believe was bought out by tpg - we moved racks a few months ago (for technical/logistical reasons), and started paying for the hosting at a discounted rate

After your comments in the first "feedback" thread on AusGamers, I always assumed that you just tried to steal everything that GameSpot et al had done, but without attempting to work out if that was a good idea for the people who gathered here. Heh wtf? I guarantee that if anything on AG was "stolen" from anywhere else, it sure as hell wasn't Gamespot.

Don't get me wrong, those guys produce some decent content (and the Aus contingent are good blokes) but their site design is certainly nothing we'd be trying to imitate.

yeah obsessing over how much one dislikes the ausgamers layout etc is not very productive.

I don't really know how to respond to you because everything you write aimed at me appears to be filled with blind rage, the origin at which I can't even begin to guess at.

I can't find the last thread in which we danced this dance; my recollection is that you had some complaints about the site (such as the big ugly boxes on the front that you thought pushed the content down or something, and I pointed out those boxes exist because they're popular with advertisers and thus there's a business driver behind them). I apologise profusely if I didn't answer a question to your satisfaction or somehow inadvertently annoyed you. I feel like I've written this a million times, but I Still Don't Get It. Hey, maybe I'm just stupid!

I'm sure you have an idea in your head about how websites should look and work. I have a mental picture in my head too for AG - I'd love the site to look like it; I even hope to prototype it one day in my spare time (which is when I do most of my work on AusGamers, and have done for the last 10 years, but I just really fuck around on it mostly now).

I'm sure there a billion things that we could do differently but at the end of the day we only have so much time to do them. If you want to actually offer some suggestions about actual material changes that you think would be useful then I'd would certainly appreciate reading them and discussing them, as long as you can gracefully accept that, sometimes, there's going to be valid reasons for why we can't (or don't want) to use them.

I could be wrong and you might just hate my guts for one of the many other things about me, like the fact that I'm pro-choice, don't want to have kids, believe in civil liberties, think people should have the right to do whatever they want with their own bodies, think religion is a waste of time, think mean people suck, travel a lot, prefer black jellybeans, only drink imported beer, think Bruce Willis is awesome, or whatever. Those are all good reasons, except if you don't like black jellybeans there's something wrong with you.

Trog i just wanna say that i always use www.qgl.org to access this website (or more likely qgl.org) and was hoping it would still stick around? No big drama if its not, just curious...

I also prefer the darker coloured theme of the qgl forum. Dark blues and greys are easy on the eyes at all hours of the day. And for some strange reason I find it looks more reasonable to have open at work then the ausgamers one, im not sure why, i guess people find it harder to read t long distance. Also I like how the layout in qgl.org allows for more text/discussion space and less avatars and waisted space around the sides and images/advertisments etc.
