Table saw that stops if it hits a finger

This is fucking amazing. A system for table saws that uses MAGIC to figure out if it is chopping wood or human flesh. If it detects flesh, it immediately stops in a tiny fraction of a second, preventing the blade from slicing through the fingers.

Apparently 10 people a day in the US lose or injure a finger due to table saw accidents.

The first comment on youtube sums it all up: "that man must have a back problem...because of his massive balls"

That's from 2009 and yet I haven't seen any commercial product on the shelves at Bunnings yet.

My brother works as a supervisor and he's had to clean up a finger or two before after some idiot chippie decided to remove the guard from his circular saw.

Wow, that's awesome. If this is 2 years old, how the hell has this not a mandatory mechanism in all new table saws?

there are a number of people that remove the guards, well because for some jobs it is rather too much fucking around

one of the places i worked had a chippie on site, bob, bob was about 50~60, a pom, and had been a chippie is whole life, he had all his fingers and pumped out the work, with little or no regard to the law (regarding safety)

he would chain smoke while working in his shed (which the boss hated, but could never fire him because bob was the only one who would do the work required, and would happily take under the counter payments for overtime) he wouldn't use the guards, (unless worksafe was comming) or the vacuum, the nail gun could fire freely (which was fun as i would often fire off a few nails onto our roof next door, and watch the boys run out to pull equipment in out of the "rain"

thing is... he put it in so fucking slowly what happened if he actually had some decent movement like you were going fast through the saw like a lot of wood workers do....

Yeah i remember this from a few years back, and it's proabbly not mandatory because it's proprietary and patented. I think.

Patents are good for cash but slow down implementation.

Besides how often do you replace your table saw? I've got my fathers old makita one because it's still fine after 20 years.

Well if he's going 2-3km/h about as fast as you normally walk, you'd take off some skin maybe? He's talking about a figure which means that you'd be needing to move a significant distance within 1/1000th of a second. So the maximum damage you could do is how fast you're moving in that single 1/1000th of a second. Have a look at how it does stop too, more or less you would do the same damage if you wanged your finger into a spiky piece of metal. But that metal wouldn't be moving.

Haven't watched the vid, but I'm fairly sure that I've seen / read-about one where a (nervous) reporter was able to stick their tongue in, and it stopped.

Ohhh yes that was it. Excellent reference source imo. Though I think I'd heard of it even before then.

And yeah, it was a great watch.

because the inventor is a patent troll who charges massive amounts of royalties for the technology.

I remember seeing some video about a saw like this a while ago. They used a sausage instead of a finger to show that the saw barely nicked it. Dunno how the magic happens but i can see it saving my finger if i ever used one of these machines.
