First Person Video RC Airplane Flying

I think I posted something about this a while back; this mob has made a kit available for people wanting to do FPV - first person video - flying. Basically it's a remote controlled airplane with a camera on top that you control from a first person view using goggles or something for a cool experience.

Anyway this mob has released their kit and a new video showing what its like - and it looks awesome:

The TeamBlackSheep Ritewing Zephyr ARF Kit from RiSCyD : TeamBlackSheep on Vimeo.

I was watching this without headphones, and heard the faintest hint of familiar music, and thought "oh no they didn't."

They did.

edit: context (I personally still love it, though the love is highly diluted at this point)

my uncle and cousin are getting into flying these RC planes and were showing me this first person POV stuff. Some of the headsets are unreal, show speed, height, distance from controller, battery life, elevation etc. Really quite detailed.

One of the videos showed the plane almost a kilometer from where it was being controlled, the headset gives you so much more freedom to go wherever you want to with the planes.

orly? makes sense though, plus I assume there are other places like airports where they're obviously illegal to operate. What about at places like the Gold Coast if you fly them off shore?

yarly, there are restrictions and licensing requirements in Australia, controlled by CASA, where R/C flying is concerned like confiscation, fines (like $20k+) and gaol time.

One of the advantages of being in the RAAF, used military airspace where CASA couldn't do a thing. Although when flying we had to contact the tower.

The basic rules:

Keep your model aircraft away from
populated areas and the immediate
vicinity of others (i.e. > 30 metres)

Do not operate within 3nm or 4.5km
of an aerodrome without approval

Do not operate in controlled airspace
above 400ft without approval

Do not operate in military prohibited or
restricted areas without approval

Consider the benefits of approved flying
areas

Do not fly in poor visibility, clouds or at
night

For more specific details visit casa.gov.au
or your local club or associationsource

that is awesome, wish i had one. The price tag is a bit steep, you'd hate to crash it first time out.
Reminds me of when i was with my uncles who like their RC boats and where they go there are sometimes people with seaplanes. One guy had bought a $5000+ plane from Canada and on his first flight crashed it, they spent the next couple of months fixing it but it wouldn't get out of the water.

This is great, but are we still using planes and choppers? Weak. Why not just have floating balls like on sci-fi shows? Get cracking on that plz...

To add to foolix's list you need to make sure the Tx/Rx vid feed and controller are operating on approved bands at approved power levels for Australia too.

For some systems you might need no HAM operators license but for others you will. You can find out more here: http://www.maaa.asn.au/

This is just the on-screen display (OSD) controller which inserts the info into the video feed. You can buy different ones. The most popular from my research is Dragon OSD.
