I actually started writing an article about this ages ago, checking out all the various online options for comparison, specifically so I could answer this question. Unfortunately I got distracted and went overseas or something and by the time I came back, two of the places that I'd gotten photos printed at had closed down.
Here's my quick notes though:
1) Some of the online places offer special deals/free stuff for first time users. Depending on volume you might be able to spray out doing it online and save a bit of money. This would be a huge pain in the ass though and probably not worth the time unless you have lots of spare time.
2) The quality does vary between online printing places. Not hugely, but there is some difference. This is possibly somewhat due to the upload process, which doesn't upload the full version of your photo - instead it shrinks it and uploads a smaller version (losing quality) to save bandwidth.
3) I recently went to Harvey Norman and was really happy with the quality and their price was, IIRC, the best of all the places in Indooroopilly (not by much, but in volume it makes a difference). The use all Fuji gear (which as far as I can tell is the 'standard' and it's quite good). They were all done in 1/2 an hour.

I've only used snapfish. I got 100 or so printed and they turned out okay. They were all quite dark (But that was my fault).

The cheapies are just a bit bigger than the size of a male hand.
If you want bigger sizes the higher prices start to kick in.
9 cents is pretty cheap Dam !

It really depends on the quality of the prints you want you will find that each wetlab and dpc's for that matter will produce different results in terms of colour hue / quality of the paper etc.
They could also use a photobook service which is kinda cool considering that it makes a good coffee table book to have lying around. Especailly if your parents don't use any digital medium to redisplay their photos

Harvey Norman regularly has 12c weekends (for 200 photos). But there's nothing stopping you for doing more than 1 order. Look for ads in the paper.
