So I have a micro server that runs uTorrent and SabNZB among other things. If I want to download a torrent or NZB with browser extensions I can easily send it to the server to download and check on it's progress via web interface, plus see past downloads etc. I'm looking for something that can do the same with regular HTTP downloads with a similar setup / web interface. Does such a thing exist?

Do you have an android device at all? I would suggest getting NZB Unity if you do, latches into SABnzbd/Sickbeard and Couchpotatoe. Otherwise, you can just port forward SABnzbd to access via HTTP, however not sure about uTorrent.

This is mainly just for my frequent laptop use. If i download a large http file I don't want to have to worry about having to leave the laptop open until it finishes, I just want it sent off to the server like i do for torrents / nzb's.

Yep, I run Transmission on both my Qnap and my HP Microserver, and use Transmission Remote GUI to connect to both; both also have the web interface available.

Works really well.

Can't see anything in uTorrent to download via http. I looked at a program called Free Download Manager which was close to doing this but the web interface was crap. It would let you and new files and view, but not manage like pause, stop, delete etc.

*Sigh*

He doesn't want a program that handles torrents and lets you download them from it, he want's a download manager (i.e. web downloads) that has a remote web gui.
