Someone in the United States is either using my email as a scapegoat or has a very similar name.

Anyway, from time to time I get these weird as s*** messages. I can't help but share this mail trail :(
Hi Everyone,

In addition to celebrating AAAA's Birthday this Saturday, April 14th, we would also like to celebrate ZZZZ's Birthday, which was March 23rd. So, bring your cheerful voices to sing HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BOTH OF THEM.

We hope to see all of you this Saturday. It should be a fun day for everyone.

Mom

My bemused reply:
Hi XXXX,

I don't know who you are, so I don't think I'll make it.

Wish them all the best for me though.

Hi Hog,

So, you are not coming??????

Guess who?

Really?
I have no idea who you are, so that's a no, XXXX.

So I thought that was the last of it.

Then today!
Hi Hog,

Last Saturday after your Mom suggested to you to join the party I was informed that you swore at her and called her names in front of various people. This upset your Mom so much that she was sick for several days and almost put her in the hospital again. In order to rectify this kind of behavior, the least you could do is to call her and apologize. It would be the right thing to do.

Please remember the 5th Commandment:
5
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

Also, "Whatever a man sows that he shall also reap".

Please think on those things. Remember, the Lord is watching you.

I love you,
Oma

I regret to announce that I snapped, the combination of them failing to understand that I'm not their guy and the God s*** tipped me over :(
You stupid bastards I keep telling you I'm not the Hogfather you think I am.

Also, f*** your God.

Will post back with updates from the crazies if I get any :p

I got this choice nugget in my gmail a few weeks back. I wasn't sure if it was some weird spam so I left it alone.

To imply that I'm dishonest or a liar is incredibly hurtful but then to refuse to talk about it is just plain mean. I would never do that to you. That is not how we communicate and I'll be the last to let that start between us. If u have a problem with me talk it through with open ears and an open mind. Sometimes I don't think you're aware that u react so quickly and harshly that you put my back up against the wall. Things are not always the way you perceive them. You are not always right. Your reaction was overblown and really unfair. I apologized and simply wanted u to know that I hadn't come down on the table that hard. To then globally call my character into question and refuse to talk about is just unacceptable.

There is someone called Susan with the same last name as me. I have s.lastname as my Gmail so I got emails for her all the time. This was a few personal emails, invities to B-day parties etc, and it even included job applications and a few courses etc (Like a cooking night class.) Unfortunately (goes with being stupid enough to give out the wrong address I guess) she has poor online habits as well, so now I receive massive amounts of junk mail, where before her it was very minimal.

I tried to find her real email once, so I could alert her to the mistake. I didn't search very hard though and couldn't find it. I might try again later. For now anything with Susan 'lastname' in it gets junked.

I once placed a big order for some Cisco kit with a guy via email, he's a regular contact whom I email frequently
this time however, I selected the name from the auto-fill too quickly and instead of emailing jim@someothercompany.com I emailed jim@mycompany

the f***** played a trick on me for a good week before he told me I should probably send the order to the real guy
it was half funny until he realised that we *really* needed that cisco kit ASAP

I dared one of the kids @work to spam everyone in my Hotmail contact list once.

If I saw that lad again tomorrow I'd smack his little head so hard that it'd bounce off the pavement and bounce back up.. (that happens right?) .. then I'd take him to the nearest pub and buy him a beer.

I get these all the time, I never respond in fear that they may be phishing emails but I'm pretty sure a lot of them are just people who don't know how to put a . in the right spot.

I just report spam them, not my concern they aren't getting their email addressed properly. That said, there seems to be a few combinations of my email and I'm getting mail for a few different people. I guess it's my own fault for not registering every combination of my name that I could when gmail was still in beta.

haha,

When I had an iinet DSL service I took an email alias in addition to my usual First Middle Surname initial account name. Anyways, the additional email account was ara@ and I use to get all these invites to art gallery openings, interesting news tips and other odd stuff sent to me.

Eventually after continually correcting people I used my google skills to tracked down the Ara who they were trying to get in contact with. She was a free lance reporter working in Western Australia whose correct email address was araj@

http://arajansen.com.au/

anyways, I left iinet and got sweet bigpond cable so I don't have that address any more, I did email her before I left iinet and told her to grab the alias, I'm not sure if she did or not.

When i was younger, there was another kid called Aidan with the same last name as mine (although mine is spelt AidEn). Anyway he was a couple of years younger (I gathered from emails) but he was popular amongst the ladies so i'd get gems like "I can't believe you slept with XXX on sunday, you promised that you'd be with me forever. I hate you." And that was a pretty common MSN i got.

I couldn't get it really across that I wasn't this Aidan guy, they just kept calling me a liar and a fraud.

Yeah I constantly get some pretty important looking documents which are obviously meant for someone with the same surname. I usually reply saying they got the wrong email, and then they resend it to me again or send like 3 apology emails.
Someone is giving out my address as though it's theirs!

Oh and my nephews are a hit with the ladies, so in the MSN days I'd be getting slutty messages from 12 year olds thinking I was one of them.

Probably none, I'm probably just making excuses for my extreme lack of interest in people getting their mail correctly delivered and my laziness in dealing with it.

Although I remember ages ago being told that responding to spam only validated that their emails were getting through and I figured with spam filtering getting better it might be a new tactic to send through some innocuous emails under the guise of misaddressed personal messages before the full salvo of Viagra and penis growth advertisements come through.

You could have had some fun with that.

"Hey baby I didn't sleep with xxxxx, she is a lying whore, come around today and I'll show you how i really feel"

Then they all rock up at his place and he gets in massive s***. Good times.

I get this all the time on my gmail account. All of it absolutely legit yet people use my email or someone stuffs up and uses my email address for;

- Applying for a job so I get the HR department response and follow ups.
- Booking tickets (I had airline tickets arrive at my inbox .. for RyanAir and AA)
- Real estate agent trying to sell house, this one is great as I keep seeing new houses he's trying to flog every week and the long winded emails he sends to "Daniel" hoping for a reply.
- Family reunions
- Governor election newsletters

Yeah I keep getting email from kids websites. Someone up in whoop whoop (no pun intended) is the parent of a child with downs syndrome (i'm not kidding) and their kid keeps using my f*****g email address.

Dear parents, proofread and supervise your childs internet access. kthxbi.

That reminds me, we used to get some knob with a fax machine set to autodial trying to fax us, the same time every night. I hooked up the fax modem & sent a fax "there's no f*****g fax machines here". I think the anger was justified, they'd ring every night for like a month or two and when you pick up you could hear the modem sounds that fax machines make. What kind of d******* enables auto dial?

These always sounds pretty genuine but my general rules is, if I don't know who the f*** it is I just delete it. Because I rarely get unsolicited clients via email I don't have much problems just delete them.

This was a known problem a while ago because of the way gmail handles full stops.

emails to poo.basher@gmail.com were also going to poobasher@gmail.com

But that was many years ago and I thought they had fixed it. I used to get it as well because my email is firstname.e.lastname@gmail.com and I started getting emails meant to go to some dude called firstnameelastname@gmail.com.

I was more scared that some dude had the same name as me with the same middle initial.

I wish I got the odd email mix up.

I got a mobile phone mix up once. Someone in Melbourne had my mobile number printed on their business card. What was worse was that they were a baker. So many calls between 2 and 3am in the morning by people making orders for bread.

You can put the . anywhere in the first part of a gmail address as they're ignored by gmail.

s.m.i.t.h@gmail.com will still be delivered to smith@gmail.com just like smi.th@gmail.com will. It's probably the same for s..mit..h@gmail.com but I haven't tried it.

HR at UK insurance company email all 1300 staff telling them they were dismissed, to pack their things and leave company property at the front desk. Was supposed to go to one person only.

I guess its easy to get one persons name and ALL STAFF GLOBALLY mixed up.

i ignored my phone for an hour and came back to 20 odd messages full of abuse and lols. last message was the guy apologizing because the friend he thought i was just messaged him.

I once got consulted for an oncology report.

I was so tempted to reply,

'Hmm, my extensive experience leads me to suggest that it is probably cancer'

But it was my work email. Several months later while visiting a hosptial I happened to notice a document on the nurses desk that had 'My name' from Oncology. Wish I also got the money..

I got cranky at someone who happened to be the guys sister. Was just pure luck that I picked her. Was really weird that she didn't click at first but then she was like "Oh, that's your mobile number on his card".

Didn't take too long to get it sorted out once they knew about it but I'd already endured two weeks of getting woken up between 2am and 3am.

Kind of the same trend of stories but no, here it is anyway.

We were out on the piss one night at the RE and as you do you stop at Maccas/HJs/Subway ont he way home. We stopped in at HJ's and were waiting for an order, another one of our mates had already got his order and was sitting down stuffing his face.
At Hungry Jacks they have that "kids Club" thing, so we filled out a slip email and all. We put in his age as 3/1/1990, his actual birthdate, we told the counter chick that he was "special" and he had just gone an watched the Broncos play his favourite team.
The chick look at us unconvinced then our "special"mate drunkly blurted out "oi, make the burgers quicker, i am a police officer". he is a police officer.

He eventually figured out it was us as we listed ourselves as his guardians and he received colouring in books, broncos hats and heaps of coupons for his "special birthday".

He eventually took our emails and posted on various teen chat websites as 19 year old girls ready to cam.
We had to bin those emails. Thankfully thats all he did.

Replying to phishing emails is bad. You get added to their list on confirmed emails and even if they don't get any money out of you directly, they can sell the list of confirmed emails to pharma spammers for a couple hundred dollars if they get a decent length list.

Best practice is to respond from a throw away email and remove any personal information and random numbers often found at the bottom which is usually a userid for your original email address.

Done this a fair bit myself, can usually get a bite out of them.
