Mozilla crumbles on H.264 stance

The organisation suggested that it had been pushed into adopting the standard, which it said is patent laden, and assured its users and developers that it would never charge for its software as a result.

"Mozilla is on the cusp of changing our policy about our use of video codecs and making use of a format known as 'H.264.' We have tried to avoid this for a number of years, as H.264 is encumbered by patents," wrote Mitchell Baker, chair of the Mozilla Foundation in a blog post.

"The state of video on the Web today and in mobile devices in particular is pushing us to change our policy."

I guess in the short term it is a good thing. In the long term, who knows.

Boo. What the fuck are Google doing with WebM? This shit was only ever going to fly if WebM was picked up mainstream but despite a few updates I haven't seen Google make the sorts of strides they need to be doing to get that shit off the ground.

I don't get it, what exactly does this mean? That we're going to have to pay for firefox? How does mozilla not supporting H264 affect mobile devices?

No to a normal user it means that Firefox will come out of the box with supports for H.264 on all platforms including mobile. I'm assuming they meant HTML5 new video and audio markups that can embed video for streaming. Previously Mozilla only support the use of Ogg format and not H.264 so obviously now they're going to add that support to it.

And they're going to have to pay for the use of that license I think as they're making money from their browser software. How much ? Who knows... But the company that looking after the licensing of the patent was nice enough to:

On August 26, 2010 MPEG LA announced that H.264 encoded internet video is free to end users who will never be charged royalties.[10] All other royalties will remain in place such as the royalties for products that decode and encode H.264 video.[11] The license terms are updated in 5-year blocks.[12]

See here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC

Too bad Ogg didn't win this one... Only if Adobe and Google just stop fucking around and support Ogg and started shipping their products with Ogg support a few years ago...

Now Adobe is getting its arse kicked by Apple (massive H.264 supporter), and Google well, they're just dicking around with WebM which is going no where fast. Microsoft being Microsoft picked to support H.264.. so now all of the sudden, H.264 became the de-facto video encoding/streaming for the Internet.

Doesn't this codec have like a massive novel worth of reading behind it or something? I remember something I think about QGL actually like this. I think the codec looks great though since the new animated shows with it run about 80mb and look awesome.

Mozilla Corporation makes 90 mil or so a year, most of it from Google for making it the default search engine in Firefox.

The current version of the deal (2011 - 2014) is actually worth 300M per year.

Wonder how hard they can really compete with Chrome if that's the case?

If their main income is coming from their main competitor, then perhaps the only way they can really compete is over something stupid like, I dunno, version numbers?

Shitloads. Enough that the IRS told them they better carefully think about their 'not for profit' declaration.

Yeah this question has been raised before now that Chrome gained a maaassive market share the last year or so. FF will have to start looking else where to make money as I believe the Google's deal will expire in the next couple of years and chances are the big G probably won't renew it or massively reduced the package.

Apple's in the same situation, they're now apparently using Bing and various own tech for their iOS ecosystem to get away from Google. Interesting times...

This is sorta interesting: http://blog.webmproject.org/2012/03/webm-gaining-momentum-in-hardware.html

It sounds like it is still on the radar; maybe they are just waiting for wider-spread hardware support before making a move.
