The EFF explains how to delete your google search history, which you need to do ASAP if you don't want it combined with everything else google knows about you - they've changed their privacy policy to allow them to do this from march

My history includes every article I've read on google news as well as searches

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/02/how-remove-your-google-search-history-googles-new-privacy-policy-takes-effect

I guess one benefit to combining it would be all the donkey porn videos youtube would start to recommend me

The Google Dashboard is your one-stop shop to see everything Google knows about you.

It's worth noting if you use google apps, you can turn web history for yourself/users off here: https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/YOURDOMAIN/Organization#Organization/subtab=services

Urgh, web history.

I have my browser set to clear everything when I close down - then I allow certain cookies like AusGamers and so on so I don't have to keep logging in.

I don't even have much to hide. I just hate the idea of tracking every single f*****g move on the web.

Ya, but if you use your Google account they track all sorts of stuff you do. What you search for and what sites you visit from there. Independent of your cookies and such.

Yeah I know, but it helps me sleep better at night. I turned Google Web History off as soon as I knew about it.

This is why I'm super paranoid about Chrome and Android. It's in Google's nature to invade your privacy.

I fail to see how deleting your google search history stops google knowing anything about you? as if they couldnt just record what you search for when you search for it........... this thread fails.

It stops them combining it with other information.

On the 1/March all your search history will be combined with everything else they know about you. Have a look at the dashboard link trog posted.

It's not a big deal, you can do nothing, no one's going to hold that against you.

but I don't get it.. you are just deleting the history that is displayed on your dashboard. Doesn't mean you are deleting your history of google searches as far as Google are concerned. Who is to say they dont list every single google search alongside your IP.

2 things. 1 - most people who care about this are probably googling things they shouldn't?
2. I for one would like to see people who do google illegal stuff get a knock on their door from the proper authorities thanks to googles heads up.

Somewhat like minority report - stop a crime before it is committed type stuff.

Breach of privacy? maybe.
Carefactor from me for using technology for the betterment of society on a global scale? zero.
Why not use the resources available to us to this end?

The benefit of Google invading your privacy is better search results and more usefully targeted products and services.

The risk is that your information is compromised and suddenly the whole world knows you were searching for fleshlights.

I have it on for the moment, and I'm pretty privacy conscious. But I sincerely believe Google generally try really hard to not be evil, and that is enough for me - for now.
