I don't want my good emails going to microsoft. What choices do I have?

Doesn't really surprise me given Telstra have been tightly integrated with the Office365 infrastructure since it launched in Australia last year.

Yeah was about to say this myself, we've started using Office365 at work as provided by Telstra

Since I'm one who thinks that changing e-mail addresses (sometimes as often as every year) is unacceptable, I've stuck with an @bigpond.com address since I first signed up with dialup at the turn of the century.

So this is actually welcome news. Till now, @bigpond.com e-mail services were pathetic. The web service (which was changed about three years ago) is downright awful, and there's never been any IMAP support nor Exchange support until around year or so ago, which you had to pay extra for the 'Premium' service (for a lousy 20MB storage quota). It's POP or nothing, which is pointless in an age of mobile computing.

Telstra know that people are shifting to cloud-based e-mail services like GMail and the like. This is a wise move. I say, bring it.

how is changing email addresses unacceptable?
forward your old one to your new one and send an email telling everyone your new one is blahblah@whatever
even if some people don't get the message you still get your emails

whats the big deal with asking people to change the address they use to email you?

Lol ISP e-mail...

Google Apps is the shit. And it's quite hard to get a Gmail address you want nowadays.

Shit, this just reminded me, I'll have to ring a bunch of places & change my email because there's no option to change it online for security reasons. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUCK.
