Up to 5Gb free with Dropbox

Saw this on Gaf and thought I'd share, I just did it myselt and I'm not up to 7.5Gb

Basically if you follow the instructions in the link below, for every 500Mb you upload you get the same added to your account, up to 5Gb

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=461969

And a little trick to not actually have to upload the entire 5Gb

make a 4.6GB-5GB file. use a file creator or whatever... name the file whatever.jpg

put it in the /DCIM/ folder of a removable drive

unplug and replug drive, use the dropbox import from autoplay.

dropbox will first scan the drive, then import the file, then index the file.

dropbox will finally start to upload the file.

delete the file from the picture upload folder in your dropbox folder.

5GB will be added.

cancel now. it allocates *after* you cancel.

Cool trick, but not worth the risk imo. Besides I have a 50gb account so I'm sweet anyways.

With MS Skydrive you can add 25GB to your storage. Just upload a word document from Office 2010.

File > Save and Send > Save to Web > Add SkyDrive credentials

Not as handy as drop box without the client auto syncing and stuff. But use both anyway :)

Sounds fine if your data is throw-away in nature and not sensitive in any way, as they don't care much about the security of your data:

http://blog.dropbox.com/?p=821 (back in June 2011)
Yesterday we made a code update at 1:54pm Pacific time that introduced a bug affecting our authentication mechanism. We discovered this at 5:41pm and a fix was live at 5:46pm. A very small number of users (much less than 1 percent) logged in during that period, some of whom could have logged into an account without the correct password.

I haven't immediately filled up that extra 5 gig so I'm not too concerned, I'm still 1Gb off using the original 2.5Gb I started with
