Which Linux Distribution?

I have an old PC I want to install Linux on. It will be my first time using Linux. Which distribution is the best for a newbie?

When I type Linux in to google the first result is Ubuntu. Is that the way to go?

Actually I am getting it ready to try and sell it. So I don't really want to do anything with it, I just want to have an OS installed. I don't have a spare copy of Windows.

In that case, Ubuntu for sure. My personal preference would be Kubuntu.

you can install windows for 30 days or whatever without a license key..

but normally 100% of the time if you need to ask you should be installing ubuntu.

Ubuntu is good for *nix newbs, definitely the most consumer'y and GUI supported distro. Kubuntu - While I have traditionally preferred KDE, I think Ubuntu has done a decent job with Unity.

i experminted with Mint on an old PC recently. it's pretty cool.

easy install but it took me a while to figure some shit out but plenty of online help.

also nuke that PC before install or sale. use this http://www.dban.org/

I tried installing Ubuntu but got a bunch of errors. Also had problems with booting the machine. It looks like the RAM is stuffed and I can't be bothered fixing it so I will be giving it away.

I've been using Ubuntu since the first version so I've been recommending it for a long time but I've recently started playing around with Mint and it's not half bad. I would probably still suggest Ubuntu for beginners, plus UbuntuTV is on the horizon and that's looking pretty shit hot.

I'd still nuke it. dl that iso from the site then burn and boot from cd and let it run. best way to clean out old data. better safe than sorry.
