Before you pick a distro you should say what you want to do with your PC.
In that case, Ubuntu for sure. My personal preference would be Kubuntu.
you can install windows for 30 days or whatever without a license key..
but normally 100% of the time if you need to ask you should be installing ubuntu.

I've been using Ubuntu since the first version so I've been recommending it for a long time but I've recently started playing around with Mint and it's not half bad. I would probably still suggest Ubuntu for beginners, plus UbuntuTV is on the horizon and that's looking pretty s*** hot.
I tried installing Ubuntu but got a bunch of errors. Also had problems with booting the machine. It looks like the RAM is stuffed and I can't be bothered fixing it so I will be giving it away.
I'd still nuke it. dl that iso from the site then burn and boot from cd and let it run. best way to clean out old data. better safe than sorry.
