Installing Windows 7 on an older laptop, finding that it runs very nicely indeed, except that the manufacturer released Windows 7 or Vista drivers for everything except the sound card and they don't exist. For a laptop which will be sitting in a bus and providing sound to the head deck, gps and the odd facebook update.
Installing Windows XP on the laptop, entering the cdkey from the laptop sticker and getting "product key not valid". Yes it is the right version. Now I have to dick around making a slp cd now.

The #1 thing that makes me rage is when something just stops working for no fucking reason whatsoever. This happens constantly with my HTPC. All it does is sit under the TV playing media yet every so often it'll just stop working - media will stop playing or it will lock up or fast forwarding stops or I can't see the photo albums anymore and other stupidly random shit.

having that problem atm with my pc. one of the HDD's sometimes wont work when i turn on the pc. i quickly open the case, pull out the cable then put it back in and it will work again. also if i plug in my external HDD, both it and the other faulty HDD wont work. they used to work fine together a month ago. might have to buy a new HDD or maybe try a new cable.

I had the same issue, it turns out that CD key is apparently locked to a specific type of windows made for that company. Why is this sort of shit legal? XP pro key should work with any xp pro disc, not just a fucking TOSHIBA xp pro disc. (this also is what makes me rage)
Also people who say they hate a particular brand just because everyone else does or "because its shit". This is more to do with people who hate consoles, or macs, or nvidia just because they're a PC loving ATI fanboy and no other reason.

I mentioned this in another thread.
Why should it be illegal? You're not buying Windows in this case from Microsoft, you're buying it from Toshiba. If you don't like that then don't buy Toshiba (or buy your Windows straight from Ballmer).

Because with most laptops now, you don't get a CD. If I buy windows and use that windows CD on my PC, I can't legally use the same key on my laptop as well, but I can't use the legal CD key that is on the laptop because it doesn't work with any CD except the one you get with the lapto.... OH WAIT YOU DON'T GET A CD.
Who buys windows though right? I mean that's just crazy talk that anyone would want legit computers. What was I thinking, thanks hogfather you've shown me the light.

Why should it be illegal? because they didn't invoice you? :P
but seriously, because vendor locking is bad karma?
It's really hard to justify why it feels like so dirty though? limiting supply? even forcing the purchase of the same item multiple times due to artificial "locking" is a bit of a stretch.
If you don't like that then don't buy Toshiba (or buy your Windows straight from Ballmer). or just pirate it! is it illegal if you already have a license for the product and you just download a copy from an unauthorized distributor?

every friday without fail.
"my x isn't work"
"have you tried" same step i tell them every time
"NVM I FIXED IT" hangs up without telling me how.
what really irritates me but shouldn't, is when people call up, say its not working, i ask them to walk me through what they are doing, they walk me though and it "magically starts working". no, its not magic, you just started thinking about what you were doing instead of clicking away like an idiot, and it turns out there isn't an actual problem.
old people are the worst at this.
I say it shouldn't annoy me because they don't take that much of my time.

Why not just get a good surround sound and attach that to the TV?

I do, I meant the TV area. I have the Tv/amp/set top box on a table infront of the couch, and the computer to the left a bit.
When I watch something from the computer its great, switch to the amp output, when I play a game it goes through the speakers on the computer desk. What I want is to be able to have both running at the same time.
The computer has no problem playing a High Def movie on the Tv and outputting all the sound to the amp while I play a game, but "I took an arrow to the knee" over the top of dialogue from a movie kind of ruins it and listening to dragurs waking up on the other side of the room instead of at the computer table is off putting.

I know winamp lets you select what output device you want to use independent of the primary sound device, surely something like VLC will have that feature.
edit: appears not to, anyway try it with winamp. last edited by scuzzy at 12:58:58 04/Jan/12

Let's you chose between primary only, duplicate, extend or secondary only very quickly and easy. I have 2 monitors each connected to a DVI port and this works perfectly for me.

1.5 hour 'conversion' i had to have with one of our staff members as it had been escalated to me from the helpdesk.. sigh..
Staff : Printer is over heating and is a fire hazard..
Me: Why do you say that?
Staff: paper comes out a bit warm, i think we need a new printer..
Me: No thats normal the printer heats the ink a bit to get it on to the paper.
Staff: No printer is a fire hazard and i want it replaced..
this goes on and on.. meanwhile i am slowly getting closer to slitting my wrists..
Edit: people who 'work in IT' or manage an IT helpdesk that know nothing about computers.. i mean a helpdesk manager that doesnt know how to fukin change the windows desktop FFS

Technically right now i work in helpdesk for a printer company, supporting clients with the printers we lease.
Most of the time is "The printer isn't printing". turn it off and on and it works again, especially during xmas where some upgrades take place and maybe they've changed network somehow and the printer needs basically just to lose its cached ip and grab a new one.. or something else like a paper jam which a sensor still says is there even though the jam was fixed.
Sometimes it's users:
Them: "The printer isn't printing"
Me "Okay, no worries, so can you tell me when you're at the printer does it say anything?"
Them: "Nope"
Me "Well, so it says nothing or is the printer unavailable right now?"
Them: "It's not printing"
me: "Okay, well I can check remotely from the web image monitor i'll just need you to go to the printer by browsing through your web browser to the printer IP address, i can get that from the printer driver, if you're at your computer i can guide you or i can remotely connect"
them: "There's no network right now, we're moving so they moved the network away already".
=_=
I wasn't exactly RAGE'd i was just like "okay i'm not sure how i can explain how information is passed from one thing to another, except by using really baby terms like how they teach you about sex by talking about birds and bee's in year 2".

This pretty much, I hate project managers that have never actually done anything technical so when you are explaining why you can't meet one of their precious project deadlines in their dumb MS Project plan it takes about 3hrs worth of meetings. How can you manage a big IT project when you know fk all about how IT works?
|

And conversely, I hate IT managers who are awesome and worked their way up to their position with the IT skills they have but have no effing idea about management.
They have no people skills nor time management skills, they tend to micromanage your workload because they know how to do it better and they think they're in charge so they berate you over doing something inefficiently even though its still done right and faster than if they didn't come to tell you you're wrong.
Then they put you under the pump when real important things are going wrong because they have spent all their energy in telling you how to do your job, and not what jobs you need to do.

Similar to m3nt4l's issue, if you have two sound endpoints like I do (headphones & speaker setup) and want to switch the default to one or the other it can be a pain to go through the UI each time. AutoHotKey is useful here - tested on Windows 7 for my specific configuration, anyone else might need to do some tweaking.

; Ctrl-Shift-` toggles between the first and second audio endpoint devices
; Congrats Microsoft for not providing a way to do this via an API
