I'm after some free time tracking software, I basically just want a little app floating on my desktop that has a stop and start button and tally the time spent at the end of it all.

We just started trialling this: http://letsfreckle.com/

Web-based; just opens a browser window so you can start/stop timer based on various projects.

http://www.marketcircle.com/billings/ is great (not free, osx)
more for putting that time on projects/invoices though. perfect for my workflow, probably not what you're looking for.

There's a ton of them if you search google but I don't want to troll through the shite so I figured I'd ask here for recommendations.

Trog that one looks a bit overkill for what I need, it's a paid app to isn't it?

I find social bookmarking is a bit better than google - it's sort of like recommendations: many people keeping a link for future reference means something. Most windows software is a bit... well.. you know, you can't be too picky.

I haven't tried any of these, just copy pasta.

one with a db file you could keep in your dropbox would be cool.

get a dock for your smartphone and you should be able to get an app where you create your own projects and each with a start/stop button

I'll whip you up a runtime app in Filemaker for free if you want Wet. It will run on PC or Mac. (it has a template so not a big deal :p)
What features do you want?

There you go. PM your email address and I'll send it over.

I use Grindstone. It is quite simple and effective.

Free version for standalone use. My work recently switched to a paid hosted app (Harvest) but the desktop widget is rubbish so I do my timing in Grindstone then enter into Harvest at end of day.

I highly recommend! Been using it for about 9 months.
