In some of the newer domestic planes theyve got 8"~ screens that let you choose movies/episodes/news,etc to watch or music albums to listen to or games or flight path - http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/entertainment-domestic/global/en

This thread is not to tell you about it, what I want to know is with the usb slot for loading your own music and movies on - does anyone know if these also will let you read pdfs?

Jerry, on Singapore airlines they had at least some productivity apps, document editing included, IIRC. Not sure about QANTAS and not sure about .pdf.

Could be heading that direction - says on the qantas site they trialing streaming all this stuff on planes to computers and mids.. if that all works out then next maybe + internets?

been thinking about maybe getting a netbook or mid instead - i normally just carry books since they don't need to be turned off on takeoff/landing, but figured if these will work with pdf's that'll suit my needs (they don't turn these screens off on takeoff/landing either). Will try finding out tomorrow if the plane im getting to perth has the screens - will see what filetypes they support too (avi/mkv/mp4)

Even if they did the screen res is pretty low. I'd hate to spend more time reading on it than the menus. I thought it was just the a380s that had the iq touch screens. I'd get an iPad or other tablet to do that on the go. Light and tons of battery life.

Re:Internet on flight. Most the American airlines flights i've been on have wifi Internet available, even on their age old dc8s and 767s.

what happens if you leave your laptop on during take off/landing?
Do they circle in the air until everyone turn off their shit?

why do they still persist with this. they've already made me put it in flight mode. but everytime when in final approach they make me turn off whatever i'm using, iPod, iPad, kindle, they even made me turn off a shuffle once, doesn't even have a signal.

does anyone think this is still relevent anymore?

I read about 6 months ago they're about to start trialling 3g phone usage in Australia. It's just to do with archaic rules from Air Services Australia and CASA I'm sure for some things like iPods.

Undivided attention is one factor. Takeoffs and landings are where the majority of incidents that require said attention will occur.

They won't tell you this, of course. :)

but it is QANTAS, they are the safest airline, and until they stop servicing their aircraft here, and looking after their great staff i'd feel safe......................oh wait, fuck it, i'm turning off the house if they fly over from now on, just to be safe

Could be heading that direction

They have had wifi on aircraft in the states for years. I remember taking a delta flight NYC-Vegas and they had in flight WIFI free (trial). QGL from 38,000 feet...

did you read this somewhere?

I swear last time I was on an a380 it had a menu option saying 'add movies/music from your usb drive to the playlist'... so I loaded a heap of different filetypes onto a usb stick and try to watch them the other day and it just pops up with a message to say 'Once your device has charged you may unplug it from the USB power outlet' and no other options to get content off

Also, this is from 2008 - http://www.smh.com.au/news/news/porn-alert-stops-qantas-a380-live-net-link/2008/09/17/1221330897341.html - says qantas was planning to allow live internet, but american airlines got in trouble because of people going on pron sites

also http://www.ausbt.com.au/qantas-plays-the-waiting-game-on-domestic-in-flight-internet suggests they might have some difficulties with coverage in .au
