Recommended Staple Mac Applications

So I bought Holly a Macbook Air to keep her off mine and I need some tips on base apps that she will need.

Mostly just photoshop and blog work, might stick the music on there because itunes runs like a dog on windows.

Anything else?

Do you buy these apps on Macs, or do you just download them? Never had one before, so not sure if it's like an iPhone, or something bizarre.

The app store they've got is a great idea, especially centralised updating

Is there any cheaper way to purchase Aperture?

What don't you like about aperture herbal?

I had the oppersite experience, Lightroom had no library sharing and it seemed slow and would toss its library sometimes, I haven't tried Lightroom since 3 however

Suits my workflow eds and its pretty quick when the library gets served up to the machine via iSCSI

I started out on LR2 then tried aperture didn't like it and swapped back to LR3

same. I took one look at aperture and thought it was pox, discovered my LR key worked on windows and mac, bob's your uncle, father, brother and mother. Ap just seems to simple to me, almost like those "professional digital photo editing" programs you get with digital cameras that allow you to do nothing more than auto correct exposure and colour balance, along with a little bit of manual adjustments and some cropping. Is there some kind of advanced mode I missed? I did only look at it for a minute or two (already had LR).

Plus it's nice being able to have the exact same export presets on both my windows pc and my mac so never mind which device I plug my memory stick into I can export piccies and have them look exactly the same.

seemed slow and would toss its library sometimes

I've only had LR3 drop the library once after my most recent format, but some other apps have also dropped some settings and just tonight 1 of my disks dropped from the array so I'm not ready to blame LR for it just yet. LR2 never dropped anything.

What about having seperate libraries on different drives?

i.e. If she has a MBA with a 128GB drive, and fills that up, can you define another library on an external drive or something?

Try iSCSI + globalsan and simply format it has hfs+ throw your catalog on that

I would grab a 27" cinema display and use it as a glorified dock

When I formatted recently I just installed lightroom 3, double clicked on my lightroom catalog and hey presto it opened and all my photos were there. I assume you could have different catalogs on different drives and instead of opening LR directly, double click on that particular catalog? I've never tried it, don't know if it would try to merge the 2nd one you try to open with the first one though.

Why not just buy a 1TB external drive and store all her documents & crap on that or something? Importing RAW (or converting to DNG) files for the higher megapixel cameras also takes up a lot of room if you're like me and keep every photo you ever took.
