PC backup to the "cloud"

So, I've just ordered a i5 2500k and a new motherboard, and am wanting to obviously re-install my OS etc, and was wondering about this whole Cloud business. Is it possible to just upload everything I have from my computer, to the Cloud? Namely Steam games, pictures, TV shows and downloads.

Is it possible? Yes, is it time efficient compared to grabbing a hdd to use instead? No

lol. No. My collection of those files are closer to a TB or 2. Just buy an external HDD, they are cheap. 2tb for approx $200?

If you're going to be redownloading the steam games from the cloud, you may as well just redownload them from steam, saves you having to upload them for no practical reason in the first place :P. In fact, steam is part the cloud I guess.

Backup saves/pictures/downloads for sure though.

Aight, and where exactly is this cloud? Do I just type cloud or something into google or what shiz naz? I would have just used a external HDD, but both of my externals are screwed and I don't have the spare money to fix/get new ones.

Backblaze is shit imo. Slow not very flexible.

Crashplan is a better option imo.
You can use Crashplan to backup locally or to a friends machine (if you distrust the cloud).

"Cloud" is a general term for online storage, there is no definitive "Cloud." Dropbox is 'The Cloud,' Minus is 'The Cloud,' Flickr and Picasa are 'The Cloud," etc.

You are really not going to want to store stuff like your Steam folder on there, that's just silly, unless you have like 1Gbit upload/download (and cloud storage generally isn't cheap).

Basically there's a movement to take storage and processing out of pcs and individual business solutions, and put it into multiple giant data centres where time and space is hired out, data is well backed up against disaster, architecture is able to scale for growing user demand, and much of the "building and maintaining your own" headaches are taken out.

Also lets applications (like games) run entirely on these super computers, and theoretically just pump out the result to the client, balancing the load to when players are active (though that example isn't great, since the response times would be less than ideal, but you could say, on an old computer or a phone, "play" Crysis 4). Or it could be software that's built once, and doesn't actually run on the user's computer/phone/whatever (doesn't need a dozen different code implementations), and they just see the result.

"Backing up to the cloud" just means that your data should be replicated to many different super storage locations around the world, so that it could take an asteroid hitting Earth and you still probably wouldn't lose it. :P

I recommend Dropbox. Have it running on my desktop and netbook. Handy for moving between computers for uni crap.

I believe dropbox gives you 2gig for free. Which if it's just photos and docos would be pretty good.

Otherwise the best thing to do is to just chuck it all on a harddrive and go from there.

first install all my apps http://allmyapps.com/

create a back up config, that will save you some time on the reinstall of a few things.

as for the rest, dropbox 2gb for free,

You'd be better off getting two hard disks. Having one constantly backing up and one rotating off site every few days or so. The "cloud" as a large backup location is just ridiculously impractical for most people's internet connection and quotas (those with uploads included). It's many times slower, it would slow down your internet.

That's why Crashplan rocks.

You can have some stuff (not so important) as "local" and other stuff (important) as cloud, or if you distrust the cloud send it to a friend.

Hummm, probably is better to just get another external. Thought this whole cloud business was free. Ah well haha.

You could spread it around to all the free amount's, but that would be messy, time consuming, and your cap would be f'd up.
Give it a try and test how it all works out.

Your Steam games are already in the cloud. Just re-download what you want.

If you downloaded your TV from iTunes or usenet or torrents they are really already in the cloud. Just re-download what you want.

Pictures just stick in a dropbox folder, you probably have less than 2Tb.

Why upload shit you downloaded from the internet just to re-download it?

True true, and I'm on TPG unlimited so no real hesitation for quota. Just wanted to sort everything before I go reinstalling.
