Passwords - how to get around the stars/blacked out circles?

So long story short my current flatmates old flatmate orgainsed the net a year and a half ago and could never get it working.

Yes, she was paying for a service she couldn't use, somewhat stupid, but there ya go (she is blonde)

I've not got it working (the username in the router was wrong, lols) however the password in the is correct. The router 'held' the password but ti's blocked out. Given that she (ex flatmate) set it up over a year ago, she can't remember the password.

I want to get the password so I can drop the shitty dynalink modem and use my billion and secondly login to the user area to upgrade the plan to an unlimited service (we must be on some uber small plan as I am shaped).

Are there any free programes that 'unhide' blanked out passwords?

Thanks!

surely they are going to ask questions to identify her, she no longer lives here and she is pretty clueless

maybe I'll try anyway, can't hurt I guess.

If she no longer lives there then tell her to cancel it?

theres a dynalink router model listed in the supported models of this but you have to backup the firmware/config and then run it through this. dunno maybe it'll work out

On some of the old netgears, you could go to the ADSL setup page and do right click -> view source to retrieve the password. Worth a try. They actually had code which read:
<input type="password" name="password" value="pwd123etc">

Also the other way you could get it is by using the Backup Config feature which has the password in plaintext.

Another way is to telnet/ssh into the modem (usually involves activating debug mode somehow) and dig around in /etc

Tell her to ring ISP and have you added as someone who can change account details

similarly to habib, use firebug in firefox and edit the password element and change its type to "text" instead of "password".. see if that shows you the password.

if she was blonde maybe she never changed the default password, have tried "admin" or checked the modems default password online?

trillion wins!!

unfortunately that password isn't the same as the website one (TPG). I'll try to get her to call up. My flatmate tells me her dad set it up so she probably has no idea anyway.

The reason I don't want to disconnect it is because I'd then not have any interwebs - I know that sounds bad, but the internet is used so much these days it's essential!!

The internet account shouldn't be in her name if she doesn't live there.

At some point she'll realise she is liable for the bills and will have it closed, which won't be convenient.

You should be able to change the account holder without disconnect. Get it fixed :)

That's the plan Hoggy, but considering she has paid for the service for over a year without it working, I don't think she is any sort of rush...

She also has the electricity still in her name... my flatmate still speaks with her and asks her to change things over but alas she isn't one to be rushed!

Annoying me, because I am happy to pay for the net and want a larger cap/unlimited plan. I might try calling them and see if they can help.

I know within the TPG account management area you can change plan and change credit card details so the plan was to do that rather then try and call and complicate things, but it seems that might be the best way.

With TPG you can change the contact person, Payment details and plan and everything online. But only she will be the 'Authorised' person on the account and only she can change or add another person to that.

With iiNet I just called iiNet and told them that I was no longer the authorized party, and the housemate who is the authorized one was with me able to take the phone off me to give his details. After I gave a few mandatory Yes's and they changed the drawing account to his credit card, I never touched it again. But even now they still use it. The account has been active for over 7 years but I've only been in posession for the first 5.

I'm sure TPG would do the same over the phone with some verbally recorded approval?

Back in the day there was a M$ Star Password viewer you could get, worked though. Can't remember what it was called, but could try some randomly on the internet.
