Optus to release 2.2 on SGS Friday

I recall a few people here own an SGS. I started wondering while reading that every other country/carrier it seems has this available for Samsung Galaxy S's when Optus will be pushing it out. I just gave them a call and they reckon this Friday 12/11 after the nice indian lady confirmed with the tech department. Hopefully they don't push it back again.
So, just a heads up, install the PC software and check Friday for updates.
(I checked a few pages, if someone's already posted it feel free to lock)

I have been waiting for this quite badly. If this doesn't fix my issues I'm having with Exchange and the random lag/ crashing of background services I'm going to be so cut. I'll probably switch to the iPhone 4...

Yeah, I'm hoping it fixes lag issues. I've got mine lagfixed but I so shouldn't *have* to install third party software to fix it like I do now.

So if you root it, you don't have to wait for telcos to release updates?

correct billyh - you can root with a 2.2 custom mod... there may even be a beta 3.0 out (or soon)? hell, if you wanted to, you could install 1.6 lols!
alize - ebay it, $20. plus i don't think you need sd card for rooting. you only need sd card if you want to install apps to your sd card

Don't buy branded or plan phones then, just buy a generic android phone if you want one to play with. That's like buying an Apple computer and bitching because it's locked down when there's plenty of other options out there.

Just for peeps tossing up their options - I have a T-Mobile branded Desire and I waited for the official update and it was a piece of piss to install and I lost no data.

According to Optuss' Twitter account .. 15th of November for Froyo 2.2. So next monday.
Are you saying Mahatma Majulimba lied to me on the phone? Damn sneaky injuns.
Edit:

Isn't Gingerbread supposed to be the tablet orientated OS? I remember google going on about how 2.1/2.2 isn't really a tablet OS and they will be releasing one ... sometime. last edited by Charlie at 21:08:46 09/Nov/10

When you know it's available (they'll probably SMS or something) do this:
Goto Settings > About Phone > USB settings and select Samsung Kies
Install and update the POS Samsung Kies (good luck, it always fucks out on me)
Plug phone into PC and in the bottom right there's a "firmware update" button next to the settings button. Click it and wait.
also I hope Optus means Virgin too !
Not sure, I'd say it should be around the same time at least.

Not sure about SGS but with the Desire, I just update over the air cause it's easiest, I go settings -> about phone -> System software Updates -> Check now
I had to make sure that I had at least 20MB or something on the phone storage (not SD) otherwise the update will fail. Also I'd do it when you're plugged in the power point (unless you got full batteries) and on WiFi.

Us ghetto SGS owners don't get over-the-air OS updates (We just have to make do with the sweet readable-in-sunlight screen and decent headphone output :D )

Ohh yeah, good point. Make sure you have more then 60% battery when applying as the phone won't apply a flash (it's like that for 3rd party roms anyway, I'm assuming it'd be the same for official).

Can't you just root your phone & use a generic 2.2?
Personally I wish I could go back to 2.1, my screen seems uber sensitive in 2.2 & either the phone has gone crazy & just selects stuff randomly or I'm brushing against it so softly I can't even feel it but it's detecting that I've touched it. HTC Desire

Can't you just root your phone & use a generic 2.2? Unfortunately no, the source code for the SGS drivers hasn't been released. People are working on creating decent roms but it's not as easy as more open phones :(

So samsung phones are basically iphones running android? How do you use generic HTC roms then? Do HTC provide them? Don't samsung make generic roms? Or are you forced to rely on your provider to release the software, like when you have a laptop you can't just go get the nvidia drivers for your video card, you have to get them from the makers of your laptop?
If so, I'm glad I changed my mind at the last minute & got the HTC. I walked into the store, was about to say gimme the samsung galaxy s & thought can't hurt to ask & asked if they had any desires and BINGO! ended up with that instead :)
I might have a shitty non readable in sunlight screen and apparently no decent headphone output but at least I can update my phone :p

I upgraded a SGS with the above instructions. Worked pretty well but I was still disappointed with the speed, although its a huge improvment All the current 2.2 SGS roms are based on leaked 2.2 firmware from Samsung, not ported generic 2.2 roms that are currently released for other phones.

Hi there iPhone, nice to meet you!
I don't have to deal with carrier bloat either, and as a bonus I don't have the arrogant, better than you Apple owner attitude, plus I have so much more freedom with my device!

I am not sure if I got 2.2 on my gfs phone or not. Installed that piece of shit Keis program, updated it, then updated the firmware but it's still saying 2.1 on her phone. Says it's got latest firmware on Keis too.
I got no idea.

Just twittered them. they haven't but they're working on getting it done by the end of nov.
I'm fucking sick of Optus, once my plan is up I am moving to another carrier. I can't download apps on their network from the market place on my htc dream. Apprently it's a common issue with the optus networks.
They take fucking ages to release updates too.

I had issues as well at first. Make sure you use the installation cds/download the drivers and install for the phone first and foremost and make sure that when you plug your phone in there aren't any driver issues. Then update kies and make sure you choose 'Samsung kies' for the USB mode.

I usually use my home wifi to download apps after that one incident where I discovered an app was like 9 meg or something and at the same time it decided to auto update & chew through about another 12 meg. Good old telstra and their data: 'Pay As You Go', at the rate of $2 per MB.. Good thing I have a 200 meg data pack so I didn't get shafted.
Hi,

I wonder if you bought an iPhone from a telstra store would it have telstra bloat on it. Probably not because the only people who are bigger cunts than telstra, are Apple and probably wouldn't let telstra mess with their OS anyway. They'd probably put a bunch of their own apps on there though.

Exactly, they don't because apple doesnt let them....and apple made the OS so its hard not to have their app's on there...like safari and mail

I'm on prepaid so just buy data packs if I decide to browse the net. I think it was $10 (comes out of the prepaid balance). Comes in handy for google maps (because whereis navigator is dongs, free data but dongs).
You can get cap plans where you pay like $50 & get a couple of gig but only have 30 days to use it so you have to pay whatever it is every month to keep going whereas right now my credit expires somewhere in 2013 so I don't have to keep paying $50 every month. I don't make that many calls, I mostly use my phone for texts & porn educational material.

Social networking over your mobile gets even cheaper
Can't get any cheaper than free. http://0.facebook.com is free to telstra users apparently, but it doesn't load any images so you can't see that awesome picture of that dirty clown level makeup wearing chick you're tuning.

Are you sure about that? I was under the impression only stuff through tribe was free. Optarse seem to offer most social networking sites free though.
I gave up after the latest pushback of 2.2 and threw Doc's on, running great since.

iPhone 4's reception really is shit. My mum's phone kept dropping out all over the place and this is with NextG. Is there a trick to setup so it doesn't fucking drop calls? I'm serious, I'm thinking about returning the mother fucking thing. It's so fucking shit when you can't hear anything and the calls are made with lots of bars.
